Top 5 Fantasy Restrictor Plate Drivers For 2010

Restrictor plate races in NASCAR typically are wildcard races. In fantasy racing Daytona usually proves to be a humbling experience for teams that predicted they would have an undefeated season and thought their drivers would finish 1, 2, and 3. Luckily there is only four Restrictor plate races to worry about.

Restrictor plate races are hard to predict. Even Derrike Cope had his day when he won the Daytona 500 in 1990. Some drivers thrive on these tracks and others shy away from them. Restrictor plate tracks are known for ” The big one”. Since attrition rates at these tracks are so high the way that I will predict my top 5 is based on historical data and what happened at the tracks last year.

1) Kyle Busch- Since 2007 there hasn’t been a single Daytona race where Kyle Busch wasn’t a factor. Last year he had arguably the best car in both Daytona races. In 2009 he led more laps than any other driver on this type of track. Over the course of his career he’s been notably better at Daytona between the two plate tracks.

2. Tony Stewart- Tony’s never won the Daytona 500 but that certainly doesn’t keep him off this list. He’s been close to winning that race several times. He rules the July Daytona race when the track is slick. Last year he led more laps at Daytona than any other driver. He wasn’t a major factor at Talladega last year but he did win there in 2008.

3. Kurt Busch- Kurt’s never won a thing at the restrictor plate tracks but yet he is among the best in the series on this track type. Talladega is by far the more difficult track to predict who will win there but Kurt Busch is as safe as a pick there as anyone in the series. In 2009 Kurt finished the season with 3 top tens and nearly had a 4th until late mayhem ensued in the fall Talladega race.

4. Matt Kenseth- Last years Daytona 500 win was no fluke. Matt has been good on the restrictor plate tracks for years now. He just never got the credit that he deserves until now. The only driver who scored more points than him on this track type last year was Elliott Sadler (didn’t crash last year).

5. Jeff Gordon- In the what have you done for me lately fantasy world the answer is not much. Historically he’s been good at both tracks. Just not lately.  Make no doubt about it I think he’ll be Hendrick’s best restrictor plate driver this season.

Honorable mention drivers: Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray, Elliott Sadler, David Ragan, Denny Hamlin, and Jimmie Johnson.

Why I think Jamie McMurray Will Be Better In 2010

Jamie McMurray is best known as the driver who won in only his second career start. This year he’s heading back to that very team. The best years of his career were with Ganassi. In 2004 Jamie McMurray finished 11th in points,  had 9 top fives, and a staggering 23 top tens. If the Chase wasn’t in existence Jamie McMurray would’ve finished 7th in points. The following season (2005) Jamie McMurray finished 12th in points.

At the end of 2005 Kurt Busch left Roush Racing and this opened the door for the 97 car. 2005 was a banner year for Roush because that was the year when all 5 Roush cars made the Chase. Back in those days the Chase was only 10 cars so literally every other car in the Chase was one of Jack Roush’s.

The driver who Jack Roush picked to fill the 97 seat was Jamie McMurray. Many NASCAR prognosticators saw this move as a home run for Roush because he would be getting a driver who performed good in what was viewed as inferior Ganassi equipment.

When Jamie McMurray started driving for Roush things were never good. Jamie McMurray never had a single season where his Finish average was below 20th. In comparison every season that he spent with Ganassi was better.

Everyone knows Roush Racing is better than Ganassi so whats the difference. I’ll tell it to you right here plain and simple. Jamie McMurray cracked under the pressure of being on an elite team.

In baseball many players do good on smaller market teams when there’s no pressure on them, but sometimes when they sign with a big market team (Yankees) they simply don’t perform when the pressure is on them. It’s a well-known fact and the pressure in NASCAR is no different.

Another known fact is that Jamie McMurray has a sports psychologist. The reason why Jamie McMurray had a sports psychologist was to rebuild his confidence. Jamie McMurray is no different from other professional athletes who simply can’t perform when the pressures on them.

I believe now that the pressure is off Jamie McMurray a 15 top ten season isn’t out of question. He’s a very talented driver who can perform good on a variety of tracks. His win at Lowes wasn’t a fluke. There was no rain that day and he beat Bobby Labonte for the victory.
