ifantasyrace.com, Home Of Good Weekly Fantasy NASCAR Picks

Do you need good weekly fantasy NASCAR picks? Well you came to the right place then. Just look at my Daytona Shootout Projections. Out of the top six guys projected five of them finished within the top six. I can’t promise I’ll always be that close (OK I admit I probably won’t be), but I am a good picker. Last year at  onpitrow.com I was the top picking expert for 2009. I’ll be picking there again this year and I have entrusted a fellow picking expert to represent ifantasyrace.com. Make sure you check out our picks there every week.

Here’s a screen cap from last year.

I’m kinda playing this by ear right now but I think might make a separate page for this. I’ll let you know whats going on.

Filet Or Bologna: Daytona

Tony Stewart- (Filet Mignon) Stewart has been close to victory in the Daytona 500 multiple times in his career only to come up short at the end. In the past 5 years at Daytona no driver has led more laps than Stewart. In fact Stewart has led twice as many laps as his closest competitor (Kyle Busch). One element of this Daytona race that will be overshadowed and probably not even discussed is that the race will be end during hotter hours than usual with the earlier start time. This Daytona race will end under the Florida sun and not the track lights.  I think this will play right into Stewart’s hands.

Denny Hamlin- (Bologna) Denny Hamlin’s usually competitive at Daytona. When is he not competitive is what your probably now asking. Well Denny Hamlin’s usual Daytona 500 race pattern is that he starts towards the front and he somehow ends in the back. If you sign up for the onpitrow.com weekly email newsletter then you’ll be able to see the same stats expanded that I’m talking about.

Average Start: 8.6

Average Mid Race: 13.1

Average Position: 17.0

Average Finish: 23.8

I think you see the trend here.

Kyle Busch- (Filet) There hasn’t been a single race at Daytona since 2007 where Kyle Busch wasn’t a factor. He arguably had the best car in both Daytona races in 2009. Daytona is a tough track where drivers need to stay on the gas and Kyle thrives in this type of race situation.

David Reutimann- (Bologna) In six career races at Daytona Reutimann’s finished inside the top 15 only once. Reutimann’s stats across the board are flat at Daytona. Reutimann starts towards the back and stays there.

Average Start- 33.3

Average Finish 25.0

Average Position 26.9

None of these numbers give me any faith in him. He sure doesn’t sound like a prime pick to me.

David Ragan- (Roast Beef) Ragan won’t enter the Daytona 500 as a pre-race favorite after the year he had in 2009, but he is a guy who should be on your radar. Daytona was his one bright spot last year and he had finishes of 6th and 13th. In six career starts at Daytona his average finish is 3rd best in the series at 13.8.

Brad Keselowski- (Bologna) If your picking him because of his win at Talladega then you’ll be greatly disappointed. The only thing that correlates between the two tracks is that they both use the same horsepower sapping restrictor plates.

Top 5 Fantasy Restrictor Plate Drivers For 2010

Restrictor plate races in NASCAR typically are wildcard races. In fantasy racing Daytona usually proves to be a humbling experience for teams that predicted they would have an undefeated season and thought their drivers would finish 1, 2, and 3. Luckily there is only four Restrictor plate races to worry about.

Restrictor plate races are hard to predict. Even Derrike Cope had his day when he won the Daytona 500 in 1990. Some drivers thrive on these tracks and others shy away from them. Restrictor plate tracks are known for ” The big one”. Since attrition rates at these tracks are so high the way that I will predict my top 5 is based on historical data and what happened at the tracks last year.

1) Kyle Busch- Since 2007 there hasn’t been a single Daytona race where Kyle Busch wasn’t a factor. Last year he had arguably the best car in both Daytona races. In 2009 he led more laps than any other driver on this type of track. Over the course of his career he’s been notably better at Daytona between the two plate tracks.

2. Tony Stewart- Tony’s never won the Daytona 500 but that certainly doesn’t keep him off this list. He’s been close to winning that race several times. He rules the July Daytona race when the track is slick. Last year he led more laps at Daytona than any other driver. He wasn’t a major factor at Talladega last year but he did win there in 2008.

3. Kurt Busch- Kurt’s never won a thing at the restrictor plate tracks but yet he is among the best in the series on this track type. Talladega is by far the more difficult track to predict who will win there but Kurt Busch is as safe as a pick there as anyone in the series. In 2009 Kurt finished the season with 3 top tens and nearly had a 4th until late mayhem ensued in the fall Talladega race.

4. Matt Kenseth- Last years Daytona 500 win was no fluke. Matt has been good on the restrictor plate tracks for years now. He just never got the credit that he deserves until now. The only driver who scored more points than him on this track type last year was Elliott Sadler (didn’t crash last year).

5. Jeff Gordon- In the what have you done for me lately fantasy world the answer is not much. Historically he’s been good at both tracks. Just not lately.  Make no doubt about it I think he’ll be Hendrick’s best restrictor plate driver this season.

Honorable mention drivers: Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray, Elliott Sadler, David Ragan, Denny Hamlin, and Jimmie Johnson.
