2009 Stats: Points Finish 16th, 2 Poles, 1 Win, 5 Top Fives, 10 Top Tens, Average Finish 16.4, Average Position 15.7, Laps Led 101, Driver Rating 81.6
In 2009 David Reutimann had a break through season for Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR). Now Reutimann adorns the nickname “The Franchise” on his team. Reutimann collected the first win of his career in one of NASCAR’s crown jewel races the Coca Cola 600. In 2010 Reutimann will be joined by Martin Truex Jr. after Michael Waltrip’s retirment from full-time racing. JTG Daugherty agreed to partner up with MWR for another year so Reutimann will also have Marcos Ambrose to lean on in 2010.
Strengths- David Reutimann is a good qualifier and you can expect his best results to come on intermediate tracks and the shorter flat tracks such as New Hampshire and Phoenix. He’s also not to bad on the big flats.
Weaknesses- Reutimann is an awful road course driver. He should be an easy pass for you on these serpentine tracks.
Intermediate Track Grade- B, Reutimann isn’t the best intermediate track driver in NASCAR but he did get his first win in the rain shortened Coca Cola 600. He clearly wouldn’t have won that race under any other circumstance. You can always expect Reutimann to finish around the mid teens or lower on these tracks.
Flat Track Grade- A-, Reutimann was really the surprise of the season on these tracks. He was competitive at every flat track race in 2009. His lone bad flat track finish happened when Denny Hamlin took him out at Pocono. Other then that incident his worst finish in 2009 was 12th.
Restrictor Plate Track Grade- C, There’s nothing notable that Reutimann accomplished on these tracks last season or in the totality of his career. If you pick him on these tracks just pray that he doesn’t crash.
Short Track Grade- B-, He’s about a mid to high teens driver at best on all the short tracks. In 2010 I think Reutimann will have the most playability at Richmond. He was extremly competitive in the 2008 fall Richmond race and in 2009 he performed well at New Hampshire and Phoenix which have similar characteristics.
Road Course Track Grade- D, Reutimann has just about zero confidence on these tracks and his boss feels just about the same way. If you willingly pick Reutimann at Infineon or Watkins Glen then all that I can do is wish you the best of luck.
How to use David Reutimann from a fantasy racing perspective in 2010?
Reutimann is a consistent intermediate track driver. Rarely is his car ever uncompetitive on these tracks. Reutimann is also a good play on on the flat tracks. If your in a league that rewards good qualifying David Reutimann is someone who should certainly be on your radar.
