David Reutimann 2011 Fantasy NASCAR Preview
2010 Stats: Points Finish 18th, 1 Win, 6 Top Fives, 9 Top Tens, Average Running Position 17.3, Average Finish 18.1, Laps Led 104, Driver Rating 82.7
In 2010 David Reutimann earned his nickname “The Franchise”. His win in the “Windy City” was an unquestioned victory unlike his 2009 win at Charlotte. My concern about David Reutimann is that we’ve seen the best of him already and he’s a sub top fifteen driver. In 2010 David Reutimann finished lower in the points and had fewer top tens compared to 2009.
Strengths – Both of Reutimann’s victories have come on intermediate tracks but he’s certainly not a one trick pony. All three of the short flat tracks (New Hamsphire, Phoenix, and *Richmond) are among Reutimann’s top ten tracks.
* = Similar to New Hampshire and Phoenix but is classified as a short track at ifantasyrace.com.
Weaknesses – His two worst tracks average finish wise are Infineon and Watkins Glen. That mean’s DO NOT USE.
Intermediate Track Grade- B+, Reutimann is a viable option on intermediate tracks. He’s not a budget buster driver and he’s nearly a lock for a top fifteen finish on this track type. 57% percent of the laps he led in 2010 were on this track type.
Flat Track Grade- B, Reutimann is a very good flat track driver. He’s solid at both the small ones and the big ones. 2010 wasn’t his best flat track year but he was competitive at every flat track race in 2009. His lone bad flat track finish happened when Denny Hamlin took him out at Pocono. Hamlin was lucky David Reutimann didn’t gun for him like he did Kyle Busch at Kansas. Other than that incident his worst finish in 2009 was 12th.
Restrictor Plate Track Grade- B+, Reutimann was a very improved driver in 2010 on these tracks. In 2009 his best plate finish was 15th. In 2010 his worst plate finish was 14th. His 2010 average finish at these wild card venues was 8.5.
Short Track Grade- C+, Besides his second place finish at Bristol nothing good happened for him on this track type in 2010. His average finish in all the other short track races was 25.4.
Road Course Track Grade- D+, His best finish in six road course races is 20th. He is improving though because in the last three he hasn’t finished in the thirties.
How to use David Reutimann from a Fantasy NASCAR Perspective in 2011? Reutimann is a consistent intermediate track driver. Rarely is his car ever uncompetitive on these tracks. Reutimann is also a good play on the flat tracks. If you’re in a league that rewards good qualifying David Reutimann is someone who should certainly be on your radar.
