My Proposals For NASCAR’s New Points System
By now you’ve all heard about NASCAR’s new proposed 43 through 1 scoring system. I see nothing wrong with change, I welcome change. NASCAR’s scoring system certainly isn’t perfect. Unless you have your scoring cheat sheet next to you the chances are you probably don’t know how many points finishing 21st is worth. Now you’ll just need your calculator.
It’s time for NASCAR fans to embrace change. The current Latford system was written on a napkin. Lots of problems can arise from this such as what were they eating, greasy foods can smear writing. It happens.
Some of my proposals for modifying the 43 through 1 system are……..
The winner will receive 50 points. NASCAR wants to reward winning and a 8 point swing would be significant. The scoring impact of this will be about twice as much as what it is under the current system.
I would also reward 1 point to the pole winner. It’s time poles count towards something tangible in the points column. If NASCAR wants to create drama moments, this will help.
In terms of lap leader points I would reward the driver who led the most laps 3 points. I would reward drivers who led 1 lap zero points. There’s no need to reward uncompetitive cars any points for staying out under caution. I would however reward drivers who led 5 laps or more 1 point.
Another change I would make is that all drivers who finish between 33rd and 43rd would receive 10 points. This would ensure that drivers in wrecked cars stay off the track and keep their debris to themselves. In my mind there’s no reason why the driver who finished 33rd should receive more points than the 43rd place driver. They’re equally bad.
