Daytona Coke Zero 400: Drivers to avoid

Ryan Newman – Ryan Newman had a tough Daytona 500. On lap #13 he had a flat tire and spun out. He then came down to pit road only to have a loose tire roll off his car following a pit stop bringing him to a dead halt on pit road. Allmendinger got the worst of this incident. With five laps to go Newman was running in 8th but he wrecked the very next lap. Perhaps no big name driver has been worse than Newman at plate tracks. Since he won the 2008 Daytona 500 he hasn’t finished better than 20th here. At Talladega his last finish better than 23rd was back in 2009. (Yahoo! B Driver)

Aric Almirola – In this years Daytona 500 Aric Almirola finished 33rd. In 2009 he made his other Daytona start and finished 30th. The “big one” always happens at Daytona and Aric Almirola was responsible for one of them in February. Almirola has had some recent success at the other restrictor plate track venue. At Talladega his last three finishes are 12th, 13th and 20th. (Yahoo! C Driver)

Bobby Labonte – Labonte has had good performances in the last two Daytona 500’s. He finished 4th last year and 14th this year. In 2008 at Daytona he finished 11th and 13th. Outside of these flashes of hope all of his other finishes since 2005 have been outside the top fifteen. A good finish for him in this race would be in the teens. An expected finish for him in this race would be in the 20′s. (Yahoo! C Driver)

Michael Waltrip – Mark Martin didn’t want to race at Daytona and as a result Michael Waltrip will be piloting the #55 this week. Waltrip attempted to race in this season’s Daytona but he failed to make the field. In May he drove the #55 at Talladega and finished 19th. Restrictor plate tracks are undoubtedly Waltrip’s best track type. All of his wins have come at these venues and he’s three-time winner at Daytona. It should be noted that during the height of his success here DEI cars were nearly unbeatable. I can’t say the same about his MWR car. (Yahoo! C Driver)
