Average Practice Speeds: Watkins Glen – Finger Lakes 355

Rain ruined Friday–for the most part–with the Sprint Cup cars only getting about one hour of practice time at Watkins Glen International. Thankfully, NASCAR added a practice on Saturday morning, so we will have a decent amount of practice data to review. The radar looks pretty clear for both Saturday as well as during the race on Sunday. Be sure to come back and check out my final Finger Lakes 355 Predictions after qualifying.

Important Practice Notes: Travis Kvapil was the first to take a spin in practice but didn’t hit anything. Later on, Kyle Busch also turned his car around and didn’t understand why his car was so bad. Some notable drivers with reported brake issues were Kevin Harvick (said the brakes were soft and had to pump them going into the turns) and Martin Truex, Jr. (just didn’t feel right). With about 20 minutes left in first practice, Patrick Long blew an engine and Denny Hamlin hit the oil and went into the wall. Jeff Burton then had nowhere to go and ran in the back of Hamlin. Both the #31 and the #11 went to backup cars. Burton got back on track and made a lap or two but Hamlin had smoke in his backup car and never completed a lap. Happy Hour wasn’t televised, so I had to rely on Twitter for the happenings. Casey Mears stalled early into the session, but that’s about it.

Average Practice Speeds:

Average practice speedsĀ are calculated by taking the average speed of each driver in each practice and multiplying it by the number of laps ran. When you do this for each practice and add theĀ  totals together, and then divide by the total number of laps ran, you get an average of their practice speed, instead of just the one lap statistic you see when you look at practice sheets. I have found over the years that this is much more accurate as to whether or not someone has a car that is good for one lap or one that can consistently be fast. These numbers, however, can be skewed if a team puts new tires on frequently or rarely changes the tires. Note: The laps that Denny Hamlin and Jeff Burton ran before the wreck were removed. Those marked in red must qualify on time for the race.

Hey, whats up ? I have gordon starting over tony in my A list, marcos n juan in B list, and hornish over vickers. How that look ?
    t/y

      Hi Mark,

I think I would go Tony over Gordon. Gordon’s a good road course driver but he’s better at Infineon. Your B list looks good. In C it’s essentially a toss up. Also just so you know there’s lots of paragraphs of in depth information about those drivers in various articles this week. You can get a 1 race pass for $1 with the discount code FNP.

in my fantasy league, should i pick Kyle Busch or BK?

      • Ryan Rantz August 12, 2012 at 10:15 am #

I think it’s really a toss up but I think I would take BK because
        1. Kyle has found a lot of trouble lately
        2. Keselowski has consistently been finishing well
        3. I think Keselowski is really happy with his car

Keselowski could actually have a better car than Kyle. The 2 is safer and a little faster.

Ryan, don’t you think jeff has been good in the last 8 races, and also needs that 2nd win for the chase where tony is in ? Also, jeff had faster times in 1st n 2nd practices. I think he,s determined.

    • Ryan Rantz August 11, 2012 at 9:22 pm #

He needs a 2nd win but he lucked into the first one. Jeff really hasn’t been that good at Watkins Glen. At skill tracks like this I think the way to go is with recent track history over practice speeds.

    Mark:

Stewart over Gordon in a heartbeat this week.

  4. chasman August 12, 2012 at 10:25 am #

the 18 probably will win or wreck. Hope he doesn’t take the 2 with him.
    thanks

another questions the 1 or 51?

    • Jordan McAbee August 12, 2012 at 10:34 am #

51 is going to try and do the race on two stops like Sonoma. If that works out for them again they’ll get a good finish. If not it could be bad.

sounds like #1 is safer pick, finishing around 20

51 looses a wheel, the 1 looks like a much better pick now
