Daytona 500: Fantasy NASCAR “Mid Pack” Predictions
Jeff Gordon – Jeff Gordon was one of the most unlucky drivers at Daytona last year. In the 500 he cooked his engine and in July he was involved in multiple accidents. In one of them he even wrecked while coming down pit road. That’s the fantasy NASCAR definition of bad luck. Jeff Gordon is a three-time winner of this race but his last was in 2005. In the Daytona 500′s since his win his best finish is 10th and his average finish is 26th. Now that the race is going back to traditional drafting look for this smart veteran to have a an improved showing barring bad luck. (Yahoo! A Driver)
Joey Logano – In the Daytona 500 Joey Logano will be making his debut in the #22 for Roger Penske. I think this is a good move for Joey Logano even though it’s not by choice. “Sliced Bread” needed a change of scenery because it wasn’t working out at Joe Gibbs Racing. Joey Logano has been a strong performer at Daytona recently. His last three finishes have been 4th, 9th and 3rd. Prior to those three races all of his other finishes were 19th or worse. (Yahoo! Martin Truex Jr. – Martin Truex Jr. has been a clutch performer in the Daytona 500 when it comes to leading at the mid-point. He’s taken that bonus money home the last two years in a row. When the points are awarded though he hasn’t fared well. In fifteen races at Daytona he’s only finished in the top ten once! In these races he also only has four top fifteen finishes. I’ve always viewed Truex Jr. as an unlucky driver and at high attrition tracks I would recommend you avoid him. (Yahoo! B Driver)

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. – Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will be piloting the car that dominated the plate races last year. This team won the Daytona 500, the fall Talladega race and never finished worse than 3rd on this track type. It’s very unlikely that Stenhouse Jr. will repeat what Kenseth did for a number of reasons. #1 is that he’s not former series champion Matt Kenseth, he’s a rookie. #2 is that much of Kenseth’s success was predicated on working with Greg Biffle. It remains to be seen if the new Ford will allow bump drafting and if he can work well with teammates. (Yahoo! C Driver)
Trevor Bayne – Trevor Bayne will likely be an attractive fantasy option for many. His win in the 2011 Daytona 500 was one of the biggest upsets in NASCAR history. One concern about Bayne is that he could be a one hit wonder. That’s certainly not unheard of here. Following his win his other finishes at Daytona are 41st, 35th and 27th. In last years Great American Race he found trouble early. He was one of many drivers who got swept up in the Jimmie Johnson lap #2 wreck. If you pick Bayne don’t get your hopes up to much. Miracles happen (his win) but does lightning strike twice? (Yahoo! B Driver)
