Phoenix Subway Fresh Fit 500: Fantasy NASCAR “Front Runner” Rankings
Ryan Newman – Ryan Newman has been one of the best drivers at Phoenix since the reconfiguration. In November he finished 5th and lead 5 laps. In the spring race he finished 21st but that finish deserves an asterisk mark. In that race with 57 laps to go he was battling Carl Edwards for 6th but they got together and Newman hit the wall. It wasn’t fatal damage but he finished two laps down in 21st. In the inaugural race on the new layout he finished 5th. If it wasn’t for a wreck in the March race last year he would likely rank as the second best driver after “Top Tier Elite” driver Denny Hamlin since the track was changed. I would consider Newman the best pick available in these “Front Runner” Rankings for the Phoenix Subway Fresh Fit 500. (Yahoo! B Driver)
Mark Martin – Mark Martin was solid in the #55 MWR car last season. In the spring race he started on the pole and finished 9th. His car was slow on short runs but was strong on long runs. He had top five potential but his pit crew had a time-consuming final pit stop (went in 5th, came out outside the top ten). In the fall Martin started in 10th and finished 10th. Richmond is the most similar track on the schedule and last season he had finishes of 3rd and 8th. Martin is one of the smartest drivers in the series and his experience behind the wheel will help his team adjust the Gen 6 car. Look for Martin to be an asset for the whole MWR organization in this race. (Yahoo! B Driver)
Tony Stewart – Neither Phoenix race was trouble-free for Tony Stewart last year. In the spring he had a top ten car but under caution he shut off his engine to save fuel and couldn’t get it restarted. As a result he finished 22nd. In November with 32 laps remaining he was running in 14th but got spun with a little help from Aric Almirola. In the inaugural race on the new surface Stewart had arguably the best car. In that race he finished 3rd, had an average running position of 2nd and earned the best driver rating (136.2). I expect Tony Stewart’s talent to really benefit him in this race. (Yahoo! A Driver)
