Las Vegas Kobalt Tools 400 – Fantasy NASCAR “Front Runner” Rankings
Kasey Kahne – Last year at Las Vegas Kasey Kahne set a new track record in qualifying. He didn’t capitalize on his first place starting position though. When the green flag waved to start the race he never led a lap and fell out of the top ten pretty quickly. Later in the race when his car was tuned to his liking he was good. If people in your fantasy league just look at Kahne’s finish position from last year then he could have strong fantasy potential for you. Last year he finished 19th but that result deserves an asterisk. With four laps to go he was running around the top five but had problems during a restart and got into the wall. Kahne should have a strong performance in the Kobalt Tools 400. When it comes to 1.5 mile tracks he’s one of the best in the business. My concern about Kahne is that he’s off to a troubled start just like last season. If it wasn’t for that fact I would’ve ranked him as a “Top Tier Elite” Pick. (Yahoo! A Driver)
Kyle Busch – Kyle Busch is a flat-out stud in qualifying at Las Vegas. His average starting position is 6.4 and in the last seven years he’s won two poles and has started in the top 5 six times. In 2009 Kyle Busch qualified first, changed his engine which forced him to start in the rear of the field but still took the #18 to victory lane. In the four Vegas races before he won he had a 6.25 average finish. In the three races since he won he has a best finish of 15th and an average finish of 25.3. Last year Kyle Busch started in the rear of the field but drove his way to the front pretty quickly. It took him just 21 laps to crack the top twenty. Once he got closer to the front though he found his first problem. In the race Travis Kvapil blew up and Kyle got into his oil and slammed the wall. Also with 21 laps to go he spun out. (Yahoo! Martin Treux Jr. – Last season on this track type Martin Truex Jr. was one of the best drivers in the series. He scored the second most points and tied Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne for the most intermediate track top tens (13). Last year at Vegas Truex Jr. started off the race strong but faded as the event went on. In the first half of the race he ran many laps inside the top eight but in the second half he slid back from there to a 17th place finish. In 2011 Truex Jr. finished 6th but it’s important to note all of his other finishes are 12th or worse. His Vegas average finish is 17.4. (Yahoo! B Driver)
