Fantasy NASCAR Asterisk Mark Report – Daytona
Daytona is ripe for creating asterisk mark finishes and in some races at this venue the better question to ask is who didn’t have a misleading result. Below are notable drivers who finished worse than they performed in the season opening Daytona 500.
In 2014 at restrictor plate tracks Landon Cassill scored the 8th most points and had a 14.5 average finish. In the Daytona 500 he never had a chance to keep up his 2014 momentum on this track type going. On lap 20 he brought out the first caution when his engine blew up.
Tony Stewart looked competitive in the Daytona 500. His race of course wasn’t incident free. On lap 41 he was running in 6th but he bounced off the wall and got significant damage which led to his 42nd place finish. At the time of the Stewart accident Matt Kenseth was running in 13th but he was caught up in the carnage. The damage led to his 35th place finish. Ryan Blaney and Michael Waltrip also got damage from this incident.
Brad Keselowski had a competitive car in the Daytona 500. He wasn’t as strong as his teammate but not many drivers were. His race unraveled in the last quarter of the event. With 40 laps to go he was running in 8th but his engine blew up. His engine failure impacted other drivers and led to their misleading results. When his motor blew up it oiled down the track and right behind him in 13th Jamie McMurray lost control of his car and got into the wall. Behind the #1 running in 15th Ryan Newman ran into the back of him and got serious damage to his nose which led to his 38th place finish.
At the end of the Daytona 500 Joey Logano was probably nervous because not only did Brad Keselowski’s engine blow up but with 25 laps to go quasi teammate Ryan Blaney’s engine went “kaboom” while he was running around 13th.
Justin Allgaier and Ty Dillon played a big impact in the race even though they weren’t competitive. With 4 laps to go they brought out the red flag together which led to the Green-White-Checker. At the time of their troubles they were both running around 20th.
Jeff Gordon had a good showing in the Daytona 500. He led the most laps, had a 5th place average running position, earned the 5th best driver rating but on the final lap while he was running around 11th he was caught up in the “Big One”. Other notables in the “Big One” were Kyle Larson, Carl Edwards, AJ Allmendinger, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Paul Menard.
