Talladega Race Notes
Jeff Gordon started on the pole and choose to start in the inside lane. He led the first three laps.
On lap 4 Kasey Kahne took the lead. At that time it looked like Jeff Gordon did some experimenting by going from the inside lane to the outside lane and then dropping back a few positions.
On lap 7 Tony Stewart took the lead and paced the field for the next 5 laps.
On lap 12 Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the lead for the first time in the race. He led the next 4 laps.
Notable drivers who dropped to the back early: Clint Bowyer, Ryan Newman, Joey Logano, Brian Scott, Sam Hornish Jr., Greg Biffle and AJ Allmendinger
Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s plan was to show speed early so that it would make others more willing to work with him later.
Big Moment: On lap 19 Brian Scott spun and brought out the first caution. Michael Waltrip had contact with him and got fairly heavy nose damage.
Running order on lap 20 under caution: 24,88,6,17,19,48,1,2,21,3 … 14,13,27,5,10,18,42,43,38,11 … 20,41,4,40,33,78,7,35,22 … 51,46,55,15,16,32,98,23,34,31 … 47
On lap 32 there was a mini-break away at the front of the pack with the 24,48,27,21,17 and 5.
On lap 43 Jamie McMurray showed good speed as he was moving towards the front.
Big Moment: On lap 47 a BIG ONE occurred. Notable drivers collected were Kasey Kahne, Trevor Bayne, Joey Logano, Kyle Larson, Greg Biffle, David Ragan, Landon Cassill, Alex Bowman, Danica Patrick, Aric Almirola, Justin Allgaier, Josh Wise and Matt DiBenedetto. The Big One happened when Bayne lost control of his car while running in 8th.
