Atlanta Race Notes:

Kevin Harvick who started on the pole selected to start in the low-line. He led the first 36 laps. Of the first 127 laps he paced the field for all but 3 circuits. Kevin Harvick’s car was extremely strong at running the low-line. Nobody else could run that groove at his pace. In just 7 laps he had a 1.5 second lead.

On lap 25 Stenhouse Jr. who was in second was 3 seconds back. Newman who was in third was 7 seconds back.

Around lap 35 the first pit cycle started. Atlanta is very hard on tires and it’s the reason for the early stops because the speed drop off is so great. During this pit cycle Ryan Newman led 3 laps. When one driver comes to pit road almost everyone follows them shortly.

  • During the first pit cycle Matt Kenseth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. were caught speeding on pit road.

During the first pit cycle Denny Hamlin who was running in the top ten was pleased with his car.

Notable Moment: While running just outside the top ten on lap 47, Ryan Blaney made an unexpected pit stop for a tire issue. This dropped him a lap down into the thirties.

Notable Moment: With about 15 laps to go in segment #1 Ryan Blaney made an unexpected pit stop because of another tire issue. Ty Dillon also pitted around this time. This dropped both of them two laps down.

With 7 laps to go in Stage #1, Kevin Harvick had about a 5 second lead.

Near the end of Stage #1 Daniel Suarez came down to pit road so he wouldn’t have to pit during the Stage caution.

On lap 112 Joey Logano started to talk about possibly having a loose wheel over his radio. He was running in 6th at the time. Earlier he also got slightly into the wall.

Notable Moment: While running in 2nd on lap 117, Brad Keselowski made an unexpected pit stop for a tire issue.

Notable Moment: Around lap 120, Joey Logano was caught speeding on pit road.

Martin Truex Jr. was really pleased with his car during pit stops around lap 126.

Notable Moment: Around lap 133 while running around 6th, Jimmie Johnson was caught speeding on pit road. This dropped him a lap down to 18th.

Notable Moment: While leading on lap 143 Brad Keselowski made an unexpected pit stop.

Big Moment: With 7 laps to go in Stage #2, Denny Hamlin made an unexpected pit stop for a vibration. After completing his stop he said something was broken. Prior to his problem he was running in the top ten. He burned a right rear hub.

The end of Stage #2 marked the end of the race for Hamlin.

During the Stage #2 caution Ricky Stenhouse Jr. got the “free pass.”
