2009 Stats: o Wins, 3 Poles, 1 Top Five, 6 Top tens, Average finish 21.9, Average position 17.8, Laps led 184, Driver rating 76.3
In 2010 Martin Truex Jr will be surrounded by fresh scenery. For the first time in his NASCAR career Truex will not be racing under the DEI (technically EGR) banner. Treux left for greener pastures that await him at Michael Waltrip Racing. In 2010 Truex will be piloting the #56 Napa Toyota. Is the grass really greener on the other side of the fence? I guess we’ll be able to ask him after the seasons over.
Strengths- Any track where there’s a high line for Treux to utilize. Truex is also pretty good on the shorter flat tracks.
Weaknesses- His performances across the board represent a very erratic racer. Treux made the Chase a few years ago but since then his numbers have really fallen off.
Intermediate Track Grade- B, Treux was a solid top 10 driver at the end of 2009 on the intermediate tracks. Treux is cut from the same mold as Dale Earnhardt Jr when it comes to racing philosophy on these tracks (running at the top of the track to keep momentum going).
Flat Track Grade- B-, When it comes to flat tracks the shorter they are the better Treux performs on them. Treux is a good solid pick for both Phoenix and New Hampshire, but he’s only so-so at the bigger flat tracks (Pocono, Indy).
Restrictor Plate Track Grade- C+, Truex won the pole for the Daytona 500 and finished 11th but after that it was all down hill for him on these tracks. His other finishes were 33rd, 25th, and he survived the big one at Talladega and finished 14th.
Short Track Grade- C, Martin Treux jr. really struggled on these tracks. Avoid picking him at these tracks at all costs. He ran pretty good at the summer Bristol race but the set up got away from him. If your in an allocation league don’t use Treux at these tracks.
Road Course Track Grade- B, In 2009 Treux definitely wasn’t a master of turning both left and right. In the past however Treux has shown himself capable of handling these tracks.
How to use Martin Truex Jr. from a fantasy racing perspective?
Treux has always been a stellar intermediate track guy. Toward the end of 2009 he was racing among the best in the series at this style of track. MWR has proven itself to be a competent race team on these tracks and so I believe Treux will be a viable pick at those tracks. Treux also is a decent flat track driver and road course driver.
