Contender Or Pretender: Pocono

Denny Hamlin (Contender) – If Denny Hamlin can get his car to run the first lap at Pocono this year he’ll be a definite contender. Ever since his career started Hamlin has always been strong on this triangular track. He won his first two outings here and in 2009 he took the checkered flag in race two. Only twice has Hamlin finished outside the top six and neither of those two finishes should be used as a reason not to pick Hamlin this weekend.
Carl Edwards (Pretender) – Carl Edwards was a serious contender in this very race last year and finished 2nd. This year the 99 hasn’t looked competitive in really any race. For that very reason I have no desire to even consider Edwards this weekend.
Jimmie Johnson (Contender) – Over the last five Pocono races Jimmie Johnson’s average finish is 6.8. In the second race held at Pocono last year Jimmie Johnson had the car to beat but bad luck beat him. What was really impressive about Jimmie last year is that bad luck didn’t keep him down. He came back from multiple laps down and finished 13th. If you watched that race last year then you would know that no other team could accomplish what the 48 team did.
Kyle Busch (Pretender) – Kyle Busch is in championship form right now, but he’s also happy that Pocono isn’t in the Chase for the championship. His career average finish here is 21.4. His best finish ever at Pocono was his first finish (4th). In his runs with Joe Gibbs Racing at Pocono Kyle Busch has never cracked the top 15. His JGR average finish is 29.25. One notable thing about him and Joe Gibbs Racing is that in each race Kyle Busch has improved his finishing position.

Greg Biffle (Pretender) – Greg Biffle is still hanging on inside the top 12 in points but this could easily be the week that boots him outside the Chase. Only twice in Biffle’s career has he finished inside the top ten at Pocono. The last time that happened was back in 2006. Since then his average finish is 18.7. Another notable thing about Biffle is that the 16 team hasn’t exactly been on their game as of late. Biffle started off the year extremely good with six top tens in the first six races. Since then Biffle’s only finished in the top ten twice in the last seven.
