A= Really, Really Good Pick
Tony Stewart – Nothing is more of a sure thing than Tony Stewart at Watkins Glen. Stewart’s won this race half the time he’s been in it. Since 2004 he hasn’t finished worse than second. (Yahoo A Driver)
Marcos Ambrose – Last year Ambrose finished second to Tony Stewart. In 2008 he finished third. (Yahoo B Driver)
Kyle Busch – Kyle Busch didn’t have much of a showing earlier this year at Infineon but his record at Watkins Glen is stellar. The 2008 winner has finished in the top ten in four out of the five starts. (Yahoo A Driver)
Carl Edwards – Check out what I said about Carl Edwards in my Contender or Pretender post. (Yahoo A Driver)
A- = Really Good Pick
Juan Pablo Montoya – Montoya is as competitive as anyone on the track and at Watkins Glen he’s coming for the win. In the last two Watkins Glen races he’s finished 4th and 6th. In 2007 he finished 39th and he had a memorable moment with Kevin Harvick (youtube video). (Yahoo A Driver)
Kevin Harvick – Harvick who you just seen in the video above is very good on road courses. Harvick won this race in 2006 when he was having a championship contending year. Sound familar? (Yahoo B Driver)
Denny Hamlin – Hamlin’s never finished outside the top ten at Watkins Glen. In 2007 he finished second. (Yahoo A Driver)

B+ = Good Pick
Jeff Gordon – Despite his cold streak at the Glen I think there’s a strong possibility things will go better for Gordon this race. In 2007 he nearly won this race but driver error kept him out of victory lane. Check out the you tube video of the incident. (Yahoo A Driver)
Jimmie Johnson – Momentum certainly isn’t on his side but this Infineon winner actually has a better record here than on the other serpentine track. Jimmie Johnson has the fourth best average finish over the last five years here. (Yahoo A Driver)
Kurt Busch – Busch runs much better than he finishes at this track. He’s finished 11th or better over the last three years. (Yahoo A Driver)
B = Just A Tier Below The Good Picks
Robby Gordon – If you need a sleeper this week take this Gordon. He finished second earlier this year at Infineon and in three out of the last five years he’s finished in the top five at Watkins Glen. (Yahoo C Driver)
Mark Martin – Martin’s won at this track multiple times but since his part time retirement things haven’t been good for him on road courses. (Yahoo A Driver)
Clint Bowyer – Clint Bowyer has the tenth best average finish over the last five years but none of his finishes are great. He’s only finished in the top ten once and that was a ninth place finish. (Yahoo B Driver)
AJ Allmendinger – Allmendinger unlike some of his other Open Wheel counterparts was purely a road course racer. His average finish at Watkins Glen is 12th. (Yahoo C Driver)
B- = You Can Pencil Them In For Around 20th
Ryan Newman – Newman got off to strong start at this track and finished 2nd in his first race here. He did that without power steering. Newman’s had lots of problems at this track lately so I would recommend steering clear of him. (Yahoo B Driver)
Matt Kenseth – There’s really no reason to pick Matt Kenseth this week. Especially if you’re in an allocation league. (Yahoo B Driver)
Kasey Kahne – Kasey Kahne won at Infineon last year but at Watkins Glen he’s never finished better than 14th. His average finish in six attempts at this fast road course is 18.3. One positive thing about Kasey Kahne is that his finish spread is relatively small (14th place – 26th place). (Yahoo B Driver)
Martin Treux Jr. – Treux has finished in the top six twice, and twice he’s finished 28th. I personally think it seems risky to pick him. (Yahoo B Driver)
Boris Said – I hate picking road course ringers but he’s the best one available. He’ll be piloting the 83 car at Watkins Glen. (Yahoo C Driver)
C+ = Got Some Question Marks Here
Jamie McMurray – McMurray’s a very good road course driver but he’s only finished in the top ten once and he’s been around for a while. (Yahoo B Driver)
Greg Biffle – Biffle finished fifth last year but in seven Watkins Glen races he’s earned his 25.3 average finish. (Yahoo A Driver)
Joey Logano – Last year Logano finished 16th at this New York track. I don’t know why you can expect anything different this time around. (Yahoo B Driver)
Elliott Sadler – Sadler has always been a decent road course driver. However, his numbers are better at Infineon then this track. He might also be driving injured this week so I would steer clear of him. (Yahoo B Driver)
Paul Menard – Did you know Menard’s raced here six times? I found that to be surprising. (Yahoo C Driver)
C =I’m Not Picking Them
Jeff Burton – Things are really bad for Jeff Burton at Watkins Glen. His average finish in sixteen starts is 22.1. (Yahoo B Driver)
David Reutimann – Reutimann’s confidence level on road courses might just be a negative number. He’s never cracked the top twenty here. In his rookie year Waltrip sat him out of this race. (Yahoo B Driver)
Dale Earnhardt Jr. – If you thought Burton was bad here Junior is another story. He’s had some good runs but with his recent lack of confidence and his dismal Watkins Glen record I smell trouble this weekend. (Yahoo B Driver)
Sam Hornish Jr. – Unlike Allmendinger Hornish’s time in an Open Wheel car wasn’t all about road courses. At Watkins Glen he has two finishes in the thirties. (Yahoo C Driver)
David Ragan – Ragan’s improved each time he’s visited Watkins Glen. If his steady improvement trend continues he might just crack the top twenty. (Yahoo B Driver)
Brad Keselowski – He’s never raced in a cup car at Watkins Glen so don’t expect things to be peachy for him. (Yahoo B Driver)
