Fantasy NASCAR Draft Advice
[2011 Mock Draft 1.0 <—]
Draft day for fantasy NASCAR is quickly approaching so how do you succeed in the draft? Here’s a few quick tips I thought of.
1. Do your Homework
– Read ifantasyrace.com driver previews. Nearly half of them are up and the pace of driver previews is going to start to increase soon.
On Twitter I asked Brad Keselowski what he thought of my 2011 Fantasy Preview of him. Here’s his reply
” Good place to start Well written 🙂 ” (direct link for verification)
2. Go to the draft with a game plan
– The fantasy draft has nearly ten months of implications so get it right. Winging it won’t cut it. If you go to the draft without a piece of paper in your hand then you’re in trouble. Also keep your cheat sheet to yourself but don’t be afraid to take a fake one and share.
3. Play some mind games before the draft
– Whether you’re in an auction draft or a serpentine draft mind games can make all the difference. If your drafting against anonymous people don’t be afraid to use some team name like “Dale Earnhardt Jr. #1 Fan”. Doing this might pre-empt people to draft him and get him off the board early. If it’s in an auction setting then they’ll probably put more money on them then they normally would thinking you’ll spend all your money on your favorite driver. Don’t worry because you’ll get the last laugh. Leave his price high and promptly change your team name after the draft and tell him you’ll work with him throughout the season because his team stinks.
If you’re drafting against people you know then just give them outright disinformation from November to February. Loose lips sink fantasy ships.
4. Draft a team for the schedule
– Nearly half the season is comprised of intermediate tracks so focus on getting good drivers on this track type.
5. Don’t draft with your heart
– You can have a favorite NASCAR driver but it doesn’t mean they have to be on your team. Always draft the best driver available. If you play with your heart prepare to lose.
6. Do mock drafts
– Practice makes perfect and by doing mock drafts or checking out others then you’ll notice what trends are going on in 2011. Soon and very soon mock drafts will start appearing on ifantasyrace.com.
7. Pay attention when your drafting
– Pay attention while the draft is proceeding. Drivers will slip and when they do jump on them. If you’re a robot on draft day then you’ll never even notice what happened. Also take note of what drivers are off the draft board because drafting a driver who’s already been drafted is pretty embarrassing.
