Practice Breakdown: Charlotte (Coca Cola 600)
Two practice sessions were held this afternoon at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and this is the first week in a long time that the cars got on the track between qualifying and the drop of the green flag. However, the race is tomorrow night and these practice sessions were held during the afternoon, so I’m not sure how important the speeds will be. However, average practice speeds (and ten-lap average) were very important–in my opinion anyway–for the All-Star Race last weekend, so I will be relying heavily on them to make my rosters this week. Brad Keselowski won the pole Thursday night for the big race, and the entire starting lineup for the Coca Cola 600 can be found by clicking here. When you see the average practice speeds below, please notice that they include the final two practice sessions only. I didn’t feel like the practice before qualifying was very important for the teams, so I disregarded it when computing the average practice speeds.
Important Practice Notes: Regan Smith had to change his transmission in the first practice of Saturday. He will have to start from the back of the field in the Coca Cola 600.

AVERAGE PRACTICE SPEEDS:
Average practice speeds are calculated by taking the average speed of each driver in each practice and multiplying it by the number of laps ran. When you do this for each practice and add the totals together, and then divide by the total number of laps ran, you get an average of their practice speed, instead of just the one lap statistic you see when you look at practice sheets. The order that they are in is the overall average speeds rank of the two Saturday practice sessions combined. In parenthesis you will find each driver’s rank in Happy Hour.
1. Carl Edwards at 183.165 mph over 34 laps (ranked 2nd in Happy Hour average speed)
