Martinsville Tums Fast Relief 500: Fantasy NASCAR “Back Runner” Picks
Kurt Busch – Busch won at Martinsville in 2002 but he hasn’t finished in the top ten since 2005. It’s been eight races since he even cracked the top fifteen. This is his worst track and I highly recommend that you don’t pick him. If you think he’s a complainer at some of these other tracks then just wait until the green flag waves for the Tums Fast Relief 500. (Yahoo A Driver)
Paul Menard – Martinsville has proven to be a tough track for Menard. He has zero top tens and a unskewed 22.5 average finish. Last season Menard finished 13th and 14th at Martinsville so there is some upside here. Earlier this year Menard finished 38th due to overheating. He wasn’t that good though and was destined to have about a 20th place finish (Yahoo race chart). (Yahoo C Driver)
Greg Biffle – Martinsville is perhaps Biffle’s worst track on the circuit. Biffle only has two top tens in 17 races. Perhaps the most troubling statistic is that he’s only finished in the top twenty in 47% of his Martinsville races. Toss in his tough luck intangible and then only a crazy person would pick him. Biffle has had some qualifying success at Martinsville but that shouldn’t even justify a spot on your bench. Last season Biffle qualified 3rd and 4th. (Yahoo A Driver)
Marcos Ambrose – Ambrose is essentially driving Roush Fenway equipment so he also falls into my do not pick theme this week. Ambrose has two top fifteen finishes (11th and 14th) but he also has three finishes of 27th or worse (27th, 29th and 34th). In April he finished 29th and had an average running position of 29th. (Yahoo B Driver)
Martin Treux Jr. – Treux has really, really struggled at Martinsville. He has two top tens but his other nine finishes are 19th or worse. I don’t see any potential this week for him. His teammate David Reutimann lacks accomplishment here as well so I think MWR isn’t up to par with the competition at NASCAR’s oldest track. (Yahoo B Driver)
David Reutimann – Reutimann’s best finish in nine starts at Martinsville is 15th. Since Kentucky in July Reutimann’s best finish is 13th so it’s pretty easy to say he has zero momentum. The combination of having a bad track history + zero momentum = trouble. (Yahoo B Driver)
