Darlington Bojangles Southern 500: Fantasy NASCAR “Front Runner” Rankings
Ryan Newman – Newman has finished in the top ten at Darlington in six of the last seven races. Since his career started his worst “natural finish” is 14th. All of his bad finishes can be attributed to kill switch problems (led 120 laps in that race), engine problems and accidents. I know I really like Ryan Newman in the Bojangles Southern 500. He has a 11.6 average finish and a 8.2 average start. Last year Ryan Newman started 2nd, led 28 laps and finished 5th. (Yahoo! B Driver)
Martin Truex Jr. – Truex has finished in the top fourteen in all but one race of his at Darlington. Besides Kentucky (only raced there once) this is the only other track on the circuit where he’s finished in the top twenty in every race. In last years race Truex finished 10th. I like Truex Saturday night. When you combine his good track history (12.3 avg. finish) and how well he’s performed this year it’s unlikely he’ll be a disappointment. If you need somebody who qualifies good though look elsewhere. His best start is 16th and his average starting position is 27.3. (Yahoo! B Driver)
Dale Earnhardt Jr. – In the last three Darlington races Earnhardt Jr. has finished 27th, 18th and 14th. Those obviously aren’t great finishes but I like his six race top eleven finish streak that preceded those results. I honestly wouldn’t be to worried about his lack of recent success at Darlington. Junior has momentum and he’s been good across the board this season. Look for him to have a good showing in the Southern 500. He’s a NASCAR historian and winning this race would be a big deal to him.
