Indianapolis Your Hero’s Name Here 400: Fantasy NASCAR “Mid Pack” Projections
Juan Pablo Montoya – Juan Pablo Montoya is a former Indy 500 winner and he’s come close to winning the Brickyard 400. In 2009 he started in 2nd, led 116 laps and finished 11th. His undoing was a late speeding penalty. In 2010 he won the pole, led 86 laps and finished 32nd. His problem was an untimely caution that got him back in the pack after he was dominating. He was then promptly swept up in a wreck. Last season Montoya had a top five car but with 30 laps to go he had a long pit stop and never advanced on the track. In his first race in a stock car at Indy Montoya started in 2nd and finished in 2nd. Qualifying is important at Indy and Montoya has a 5.0 average start. Montoya has well known sleeper potential but the bottom line is that he doesn’t close the deal. He also has zero momentum. He’s finished 25th or worse in three out of the last four races this season. Paul Menard – Paul Menard won the Brickyard 400 last season but you can put an asterisk mark next to his victory. There’s absolutely no question he didn’t have the best car. His Yahoo! race chart tells that story. His win was the product of fuel mileage. In his victory his average running position was 13th and he only had 1 fastest lap. His other Indy finishes are 20th, 41st, 29th, and 14th. Pocono is a similar track and earlier this season Menard started in 3rd and finished 9th. Look for Menard to finish in the mid teens. (Yahoo! Jamie McMurray – Jamie McMurray has finished in the top six in three out of the last four races at Indy. Last season Jamie McMurray finished 4th but it’s important to note that he was a hyper mileage driver just like Paul Menard and Regan Smith. His average running position was 17th so no he wasn’t 4th place good. In 2010 Jamie McMurray had a magical and kissed the bricks. Early in his career he’s had some other good races at Indy (finished 3rd and 7th in first two races). Earlier this year at Pocono Jamie McMurray had a good car and finished 10th. (Yahoo! B Driver)
