Watkins Glen Finger Lakes 355: Fantasy NASCAR “Front Runner” Rankings
Jimmie Johnson – Look for Jimmie Johnson to finish around tenth at Watkins Glen. Three of his last four finishes have been within a deviation of three from that position. His one finish not within that range was due to a wreck but before he crashed he was running around 10th (Yahoo! Race Chart). Overall I would say Johnson has been pretty good at Watkins Glen. In ten races he has five top tens and only two finishes outside the top twenty (engine failure and crash). Last season Johnson finished 10th and had a 10th place average running position. Starting near the front is important and Johnson consistently qualifies well. In the last eight Watkins Glen races he’s started 9th or better every race. One thing Johnson doesn’t do well at Watkins Glen is lead laps. He’s only led a grand total of 11. At Infineon in June Jimmie Johnson had a good car and finished 5th. (Yahoo! A Driver)

Jeff Gordon – Jeff Gordon is a four-time winner at Watkins Glen but he’s far from being a safe pick for the win. His last win was in 2001 and since then he’s only finished in the top ten twice and has a best finish of 9th. In his 2007 9th place finish Jeff Gordon won the pole, led 51 laps and came close to victory. With two laps to go he spun on his own and gave Tony Stewart the victory. I think a likely projected finish for Gordon is between 10th and 15th. In five of the last seven races at the Glen he’s finished between 9th and 14th. At Infineon this year Jeff Gordon had a fast car but it wasn’t good over long runs. Coming off his win at Pocono I think there’s a good chance he could perform better than he typically does at Watkins Glen. (Yahoo! A Driver)

Kevin Harvick – In 2006 Kevin Harvick out drove Tony Stewart for the win in the closing laps. That was his first and only road course win but he’s been good at the Glen throughout his career. In eleven races Harvick has six top tens and has only finished outside the top fifteen twice. His 2007 non top fifteen finish is due to a wreck with Montoya (Yahoo! Race Chart) and in 2009 he was involved in a wreck with David Stremme (happened early in the race). Outside of those problems his three most recent finishes are 6th, 11th and 6th. In June at Infineon Harvick finished 16th. (Yahoo! A Driver)
