Drivers to avoid in the Atlanta Advocare 500
Jeff Burton – Don’t pick Jeff Burton at Atlanta. His performances on 1.5 mile tracks this year haven’t been good. This season in the five 1.5 mile track races he has a 21.6 average finish and has only ran in the top fifteen for 5% of the laps run. The only drivers who ran any percentage of laps in the top fifteen (at least 1%) that are lower than him are Casey Mears, Landon Cassill, David Gilliland, and David Ragan. As you can clearly see he hasn’t been competitive. His best finish on a 1.5 mile track this season is a 14th place finish at Las Vegas. (Yahoo! B Driver)

Regan Smith – Among drivers ranked at ifantasyrace.com on a week to week basis Smith ranks right near the bottom of the list in terms of performance on 1.5 mile tracks. His average finish is 22.4 and his average running position on them is 22nd. This team has been running better since the crew chief change but don’t get your hopes up to much. I think a fair projected finish for him is 17th to 25th. In 2010 at Atlanta Smith finished 17th and 14th. In his three other races he finished 30th or worse. (Yahoo! B Driver)

Aric Almirola – Almirola has one start at Atlanta Motor Speedway. In 2009 when he drove part-time for DEI he qualified in 37th and finished 21st. That’s obviously not a workable sample size so I would recommend you evaluate how he’s performed on similar tracks this year. His performances on 1.5 mile tracks unfortunately hasn’t been great this season. His average finish is 22.2 and he’s only finished in the top twenty once. The highlight of the season for him on this track type was at Charlotte when he won the pole. (Yahoo! A Driver)

David Ragan – Atlanta is David Ragan’s home track but he’s certainly had no home field advantage here. In nine races at Atlanta he has one top ten, a next best finish of 19th and an average finish of 26.7. His performances on 1.5 mile intermediate tracks this season make it pretty clear he’s a driver to avoid. On them he has an average starting position of 29.2 and an average finish of 30th. He’s only raced 1% of the laps run in the top fifteen. (Yahoo! C Driver)

Bobby Labonte – From a career perspective Atlanta is Bobby Labonte’s best track. He has 21 career wins and 6 of them came here. His last here was in 2003. Since 2004 Labonte has been really bad at Atlanta. Since then he hasn’t finished in the top ten and has only finished in the top fifteen twice. His average finish since 2009 is a lowly 29.8. This season on 1.5 mile intermediate tracks his average finish is 28.6 and he hasn’t ran a single lap in the top fifteen. (Yahoo! C Driver)
