Drivers To Avoid In The Talladega Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500
Ryan Newman – Ryan Newman shouldn’t even be on your radar for the Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500. In the last six Talladega races he has a best finish of 23rd and an average finish of 32.2. That’s the worst among all drivers who I rank on a weekly basis. In May Ryan Newman was sidelined early with engine issues just 42 laps into the race. In July at Daytona Ryan Newman finished 5th which was his first finish better than 20th there since he won in 2008. Heed my advice and don’t pick Ryan Newman. (Yahoo! B Driver)

Regan Smith – Regan Smith is a good restrictor plate driver but his Talladega track record is atrocious. He’s raced here 10 times and has finished outside the top twenty in six of them. In 2008 he crossed the finish line first but NASCAR penalized him for going below the yellow line which gave Tony Stewart the win. This season on plate tracks Smith has a best finish of 24th and an average finish of 32.7. In May Smith was sidelined 15 laps into the race because of an engine failure. This will be his last race in the #78 so hopefully he goes out on a good note. (Yahoo! B Driver)

Juan Pablo Montoya – Juan Pablo Montoya had a different game plan at Talladga in May. Him and McMurray dropped to the back on cue at the start like usual but around the mid point they raced to the front. He still wrecked even with his different game plan though. Montoya has three top three finishes at Dega but all of his other finishes are 15th or worse. This year on plate tracks Montoya has a 32nd place average finish. He’s certainly not a junk prospect though. In the last seven Talladega races he’s scored the 7th most points. (Yahoo! B Driver)
Sam Hornish Jr. -The last time Hornish Jr. raced at Talladega he had his best finish (15th). His last race was back in 2010. All of his other finishes are 24th or worse and his 29.6 average finish ranks as the worst in the series. Smith’s first race of the season in the #22 was at Daytona in July and in that race he had a 33rd place result. Hornish Jr. has improved a lot in his recent stint but he’s still a high risk driver. Bobby Labonte – Bobby Labonte has had one of his best restrictor plate track season’s he’s had in a long time. At Daytona he has finishes of 10th & 14th and at Talladega in May he finished 21st. These finishes bring his 2011 plate average finish to 15th which ranks as the 12th best in the series. I wouldn’t want to buy any fantasy stock in him at Talladega though. Since 2009 he’s only finished in the top twenty once at this venue (10th place finish in 2009). (Yahoo! C Driver)
