Dover FedEx 400 After Practice Top 10 Confidence Ranking Picks
1) Matt Kenseth – Matt Kenseth has been the best driver on the track nearly every week this season. I expect that trend to continue in the FedEx 400. Dover is his favorite track and he’s been quite successful here. In 28 races he has 2 wins, 13 top fives and 18 top tens. Last year at Dover he finished 5th in the spring race and in the fall he had problems. This season on the two tracks that are the most similar to Dover he’s been good. At Bristol he was running in second before Gordon wrecked and at Darlington he went on to victory lane. On Sunday in the FedEx 400 Kenseth will be starting in 4th. I believe Kenseth is happy with his car and as the race goes on he’ll get it tuned to his liking and really excel. When it comes to long runs he’s always a driver who I trust.
2) Jimmie Johnson – Jimmie Johnson has been a dominant driver at Dover. He has 7 wins, 11 top fives, 16 top tens, and a 8.6 average finish. Last fall at Dover Jimmie Johnson had a good car and the battle for the win would’ve come down to him versus Kyle Busch but at the end of the race he had to throttle down to save gas. As a result he ended up finishing 4th. In the spring race last year no driver could touch him. In that race he had a first place average running position, led 189 laps and was just .2 shy of having a perfect driver rating. On Sunday Johnson will be starting back in 24th. That’s a little troublesome but who can overcome adversity better than the #48 team? One stat that can’t be overlooked though is that fact that in 86 races at Dover the winner has only started outside the top twenty-four times. I believe Johnson is happy with his car this week. At the conclusion of Happy Hour at least Chad Knaus was happy with it.
3) Kasey Kahne – Kasey Kahne had one of the best cars at Dover last fall. Don’t be fooled by his 15th place finish. What happened to him was that he had a loose wheel, had to make an emergency pit stop and then had to come back down pit road for missing a lug nut. If that didn’t happen he would’ve finished in the top three the way the race played out. In the next two most recent races at Dover he’s finished 9th and 4th. This season on the two tracks that are the most similar to Dover Kahne has been very good. He won at Bristol and at Darlington he was wrecked by Kyle Busch while battling for the lead. Today in practice Kasey Kahne had one of the best most consistent cars. Further proof of that is the fact that he recorded the best 10 lap average in Happy Hour.
