2013 Stats: 0 Top Fives, 0 Top Tens, Average Running Position 23.4, Average Finish 23.1 , Laps Led 0, Driver Rating 65.08
Strengths- In the Nationwide Series Austin Dillon’s strengths were qualifying and getting consistent results on high-speed intermediate tracks. In the Sprint Cup Series I expect his best days to come on intermediate tracks. Also unlike other rookies Austin Dillon really isn’t lacking when it comes to track time. He’s come up through the ranks and has raced on many of the Sprint Cup tracks.
Weaknesses- I would recommend you don’t get your hopes to high on road courses and short tracks. Also you can likely expect some rookie mistakes along the way. Winning races also isn’t a strength of his. In the Nationwide Series he was winless in 2013 and in 2012 both of his wins were at Kentucky.
NASCAR Printable 2014 Schedule
Intermediate Track Grade- B, I expect Austin Dillon to have his best results on intermediate tracks in 2014. Last season his two best finishes came on this track type at Michigan. At that venue he finished 11th in June in essentially an RCR car and in August he finished 14th in the 14 car. Overall on this track type in 2014 I expect this team to typically be a low double-digit performer.
Flat Track Grade- B-, On this track type in 2014 Dillon only raced at Indy. At that venue he finished 26th. In the Nationwide Series Dillon performed well at these venues but the competition is much harder in the Sprint Cup Series.
Short Track Grade- B-, I think these venues will be difficult for Dillon. In the Nationwide Series his success was only limited. When you add in tougher competition it’s hard to see success.
Restrictor Plate Track Grade- B, Dillon is capable of finding success on these venues. At Talladega in the fall he was running in the top five on the last lap before he crashed. Also don’t overlook the intangible of driving the black 3 car.
Road Course Track Grade- C+, I think he’ll have the toughest time at these tracks in 2014. He was mediocre at best in the Nationwide Series. That certainly doesn’t translate into success in the big leagues.
