Darlington Bojangles Southern 500 Fantasy Mid Pack Predictions
Paul Menard – Paul Menard hasn’t had much success at Darlington. He has a 23.7 average result and has only finished on the lead lap twice. Last season at Darlington he started in 15th and finished 19th. In the race he performed slightly better than his result. With 78 laps to go he was running in the low teens but while he was coming in for a pit stop he had a pit road violation when he hit the commitment cone. In the 80 laps before he had the violation he either ran in 12th or 13th. In 2012 he had his best result and finished 13th. It wasn’t an impressive 13th place finish though. Upon closer examination you’ll discover that he had a 19th place average running position and only ran in the top fifteen in 3.5% percent of the laps completed. (Yahoo B Driver)

Martin Truex Jr. – Martin Truex Jr. and the word consistent rarely go hand in hand. At Darlington those two words belong in the same sentence. He’s finished in the top fourteen 88% percent of the time and in the top twenty 100% percent of the time. The only other track where he’s finished in the top twenty every race is Kentucky and as you know the sample size for that is small. Last season at Darlington Truex Jr. ran a competitive race. He started 5th, had a 12th place finish, 12th place average running position and earned the 11th best driver rating. In 2012 Martin Truex Jr. had one of the best cars in the field. His strength in that race was long runs. When it came to that element of the race he probably had the best car in the field. In 2012 he started 6th, had a 4th place average running position, led 25 laps and finished 5th. Late in the race he was in the mix for the win but with about 60 laps left he pitted from the lead and many other drivers elected not to pit. That put him back in traffic and he wasn’t able to move to the front again. Truex Jr.’s Darlington average finish is 11.2. Last year at Darlington Kurt Busch won the pole, led 69 laps but his team struggled with adjustments following the first pit stop and went on to finish 14th. (Yahoo B Driver)

Brian Vickers – Brian Vickers has a tendency for wrecking equipment and at Darlington he’s wrecked a ton. In nine starts he has a 27.1 average finish. At Darlington he has one good race under his belt. That came in 2010 when he started 3rd, led 9 laps, had a 9th place average running position and finished 10th. It’s important to point out that’s also his only top fifteen result. In 77% percent of his starts he’s had a result outside the top twenty. His most recent Darlington start in a Sprint Cup car was in 2011. In that race he started in 8th but finished 34th. (Yahoo B Driver)
