Carl Edwards – Carl Edwards has had recent success at Charlotte. Over the last five races he has a 8.0 average finish, 9.8 average running position, and the 7th best driver rating. His worst result over that stretch of races is 11th. Last fall at Charlotte he performed well. The number 10 does a good job portraying his evening. He finished 10th, had a 10th place average running position and earned the 10th best drive rating. In last years Charlotte Coca Cola 600 he wasn’t a contender for the win but he had an all-around solid showing. In the race he started in 13th, had a 9th place average running position, earned the 8th best driver rating and finished 11th. In the race I thought his car was slightly better than his result. From a career perspective Charlotte has been a good track for him. His average finish is 11.8 and he’s finished in the top ten 61% percent of the time. One strength of his at Charlotte is that he’s done a good job avoiding trouble on the track. He’s finished in the top twenty 89% percent of the time. Denny Hamlin – Denny Hamlin hasn’t been that great on the track this season. Even at venues where he’s supposed to be a contender for the win he’s underperformed. At tracks that correlate to success for Charlotte he’s had some decent performances but has been by no means great. At Las Vegas he finished 12th, at Texas he finished 13th and at Kansas he finished 18th. Texas is the most similar track to Charlotte and in that race he performed better than he finished. He had a 7th place average running position and earned the 7th best driver rating. Also with 20 laps to go he was running in 7th. Charlotte Motor Speedway has been a good track for Hamlin. He currently has 7 consecutive top ten finishes. That stands as the longest active top ten streak in the series. Last fall while Hamlin was in his slump he still came home with a good result. In that race he finished 9th, had a 10th place average running position and earned the 12th best driver rating. Last spring this race marked his second full race back from injury. In the event he had a great performance. He won the pole, finished 4th, earned the 4th best driver rating and had a sixth place average running position. In 2012 Hamlin finished 2nd in both races.
