Watkins Glen Race Notes
Marcos Ambrose started on the pole and led the first 28 laps. His car was at his best in the high-speed elements of the track. The reason why he does good at those parts of the track is his aggressive attack the track driving style.
On lap 6 David Reutimann brought out the first caution when he missed a shift and stalled on the track.
Running order on lap 10: 9,15,47,18,56,1,2,42,27,78 … 22,20,99, McDowell,39,16,48,5,31,88 …. Papis, 29, Kelly, 13,11,43,38,10,24,55 … 17, Said,Kennedy,Kvapil,Fellows,34
David Gilliland got into the wall on lap 12. It didn’t bring out the caution. The following lap he pitted under green for repairs.
Brad Keselowski spun on lap 14 in turn #1. He was running in 7th at the time. When he got back in line he was in 22nd.
Jeff Gordon got into the wall hard on lap 14 nose first. The damage to his car was heavy and he went to the garage. He was running in 28th at the time.
Notable drivers who pitted on lap 16: Harvick, Keselowski, Patrick and Stenhouse. During that pit stop Keselowski said he had good drive off. By pitting at this point in the race these drivers were committed to a three pit stop strategy.
Running order on lap 21: 9,15,18,55,47,42,27,78,1,22 .. 99,20,McDowell,39,48,16,5,31,88,Kelly
The first round of pit stops under green started on lap 28. Some of the first drivers to pit were AJ Allmendinger, Casey Mears and Matt Kenseth.
Juan Pablo Montoya had a very slow first pit stop.
During Ambrose’s first pit stop on lap 30 he said his car was tight and he wanted more forward drive.
Brian Keseloewski spun on lap 31.
Brian Vickers went behind the wall under caution. His car didn’t have good speed down the straightaway so they changed the fuel setting on his car to try to resolve the issue.
On lap 32 the lead of the race cycled to Kevin Harvick who pitted early.
During the third caution Ambrose was told that the 18 was the only other car in the same ball park and Busch was a tick slower than him.
