Tony Stewart – Tony Stewart performed better than his 20th place finish at Kansas this spring. In the race he started in 8th, had a 9th place average running position and earned the 9th best driver rating. I would chalk up his lack luster result to him being one of a few drivers who pitted when Kurt Busch did his second spin on lap 180. That put him back in traffic and he couldn’t work his way towards the front again. Here’s a link to his Yahoo Race Chart so you can see how well he performed. Last fall Stewart missed this race due to injury. In spring 2013 at Kansas he was mediocre. He started 18th, had a 21st place average running position, finished 21st and earned the 20th best driver rating. In the first race on the new layout Stewart had by far his best performance and finished 5th. In the race he started in 33rd and around lap #80 he got a speeding penalty. Since he was running around 20th at the time that penalty wasn’t a huge set back. Then on lap #165 Stewart rebounded from his penalty and was running in 11th but spun on his own while racing Kahne. Then in the last segment of the race (last 40 laps) when a caution came out Stewart elected not to pit and then found himself in second. From there he raced hard and that’s how he got a top five finish with both of his problems. This season on high-speed intermediate tracks he’s shown promise at times but overall it’s really hard to endorse him for a good finish.

Greg Biffle – Greg Biffle is a driver who misses the old Kansas surface. Since the track change his best finish is 13th and his average finish is 18.8. Prior to the track change he had 7 straight top tens and 11 straight top twelves. Also before the track change he went to victory lane twice. This spring he didn’t have a great performance. He had a 15th place average running position, earned the 16th best driver rating and had a 17th place average running position. When the checkered flag waved he finished 16th. Last fall Biffle finished 13th but he was lucky to finish that good. In the race he started in 26th, had a 20th place average running position and earned the 20th best driver rating. In spring 2013 Biffle had an up and down day. He ran well in portions of the race and not so well in others. In the race he finished 19th but it’s important to note his car was better than that. He was a driver who was out of sequence with the field and got burned late in the race after he completed his pit stop when Brad Keselwoski’s rear quarter panel fell off his car. In the race he had a 14th place average running position, earned the 14th best driver rating and ran in the top fifteen in 55.1% percent of the laps completed. In the first race on the current layout he had one of the fastest cars. In that race he started in 11th but drove up to 6th in just the first twenty laps. Between lap #20 and #75 I would estimate that he probably had about a 4th place average running position. Then on lap #76 when he came into pit he received a pit road speeding penalty. That was a minor setback because he was able to drive to the front again. Then with 93 laps to go while he was running in third he hit the wall hard which was the end of his day. This season on 1.5 mile tracks he’s scored the 15th most points and has a 16.0 average finish. (Yahoo B Driver)
