Qualifying Points Potential – Martinsville STP 500
Scoring qualifying points is a big part of Yahoo Fantasy Racing because you don’t want to leave any points on the table. The following drivers in my opinion have a decent chance of scoring bonus points for you in the Martinsville STP 500.
Jimmie Johnson – Not only is he the “Martinsville Master” in terms of finishing up front but he also starts up there as well. Last fall Johnson started in 7th but in the four races prior to that he qualified in the top four including two pole wins.
Joey Logano – In 2014 Joey Logano was the only driver who scored qualifying points in both races. Last year he started in 2nd and 3rd. Over the last four Martinsville races he’s earned bonus points three times and has a 3.8 average starting position. Last week at Auto Club Logano started in 13th but in the three races prior to that he started in 1st, 2nd and 2nd.
Denny Hamlin – Dating back to 2012 Denny Hamlin has a series best 3.2 average starting position. Also in the races over this stretch he’s started in the top five every race and has scored bonus points in three of the five races.
Jeff Gordon – Jeff Gordon hasn’t scored any qualifying points since 2009 at Martinsville but he’s come very close in recent years. With this being one of his final races at Martinsville I think he’ll step it up. Even if he doesn’t score qualifying points he’s still a driver who you want as an option on Sunday.
Jamie McMurray – Jamie McMurray is a driver who has a solid chance of getting you qualifying bonus points. Last fall he won his second pole at the “Paper Clip”. Currently at Martinsville he has three straight top ten starts. In half the races at un-restricted tracks this season he’s won his fantasy owners qualifying points.
Matt Kenseth – Since he’s been at JGR he’s won qualifying points half the time and has a 5.3 average starting position. In a Toyota he’s qualified in 3rd, 4th, 6th and 8th.
David Ragan – You have to start someone on the Yahoo C List and he’s your best chance to steal some bonus points. By his own merits it’s not looking good for him but let’s not overlook his equipment factor. JGR does a good job starting up front at Martinsville. In three of Kyle Busch’s last five Martinsville races he scored bonus points.
