Dover FedEx 400 Fantasy NASCAR Front Runner Rankings
Carl Edwards – Carl Edwards is a driver who might sneak up on people in the Dover FedEx 400. At the Monster Mile he’s a previous winner and his average finish is 10.2. Recently at Dover he’s been off his game a little but I think his former equipment is largely to blame. Last fall at Dover nothing notable happened to him in the race. He started 18th, had a 16th place average running position and finished 11th. Also in the race he earned the 15th best driver rating and ran 50% percent of the laps in the top fifteen. In June 2014 he started in 29th, had a 17th place average running position, earned the 18th best driver rating and finished 14th. In only 33.8% percent of the race did he run in the top fifteen. Over the final 100 laps he typically ran around the low double digits. In fall 2013 Edwards didn’t have an incident free race. He finished 15 laps down in 35th place. His poor result was due to hub issues. If he didn’t have that problem based on how he performed he likely would’ve finished around 13th. In spring 2013 at Dover Carl Edwards and his Roush Fenway teammates were uncompetitive. He qualified 18th, had a 16th place average running position and finished 14th. His driver rating in the race ranked as the 18th best. In fall 2012 Edwards finished fifth but he certainly wasn’t fifth place good. He was a beneficiary of an early caution during the pit cycle that trapped much of the field a few laps down. In spring 2012 he had a flat tire and as a result he finished 26th. Before he had his flat on lap #160 he was running in 5th. Between 2011 and 2007 Edwards had a 5.0 average finish and a worst result of 11th. One of his greatest strengths he brings to the table at Dover is his consistency. In 90% percent of his Dover starts he’s finished in the top twenty. (Yahoo B Driver)

Denny Hamlin – Dover isn’t Denny Hamlin’s favorite track and it’s been rough on him over the years. That said he is capable of running well and coming home with a good result. One recent strength of his at Dover is his qualifying prowess. Over the last five races he has two poles and a 6.0 average starting position. Last fall he ran fairly well at Dover. In that event he started in 3rd and essentially faded over the course of 400 laps to his 12th place result. Also in the event he had a 7th place average running position and earned the 8th best driver rating. In June 2014 Hamlin was very competitive. He started in 7th and through the first 65 laps I would estimate his average running position was around 4th. Then after Alex Bowman got into the wall he got busted speeding on pit road. That penalty dropped him back to the mid 20′s but he was able to battle his way back towards the front without much difficulty. By about lap 160 he was back in the top ten and from that point on he never really ran lower than 8th. Over the final 240 laps I would estimate his average running position was around 6th. When the checkered flag waved he finished 5th and earned the 7th best driver rating. In fall 2013 while he was in the midst of a terrible slump he had a mediocre afternoon. In that race he had a 14th place average running position, earned the 16th best driver rating and finished 20th. In the two Dover races prior to that he had back to back poles. In June 2013 Hamlin had about a 6th place car but with 24 laps to go he got into the wall hard and went to the garage. When the checkered flag waved he finished 34th but don’t overlook his 7th place average running position, 9th best driver rating and 41 laps led. In fall 2012 at Dover he had a top three car but had to pit with less than 10 laps to go for a splash and go. In that event he had a 2nd place average running position, earned the 2nd best driver rating, led 39 laps, and finished 8th. In his career at Dover he’s finished in the top ten 33% percent of the time. (Yahoo A Driver)

Ryan Newman – Early in Ryan Newman’s career he was the “Man” at Dover and was close to money in the bank. He won in 3 of his first 6 races. Over the last three races he’s run well. Last fall Newman had a solid afternoon. He started in 20th and slowly crept up to his 8th place finish. It should also be noted in the event he had a 12th place average running position and earned the 14th best driver rating. In June 2014 he finished 31st but you can put an asterisk mark next to that result. In the event he had an up and down day. He started in 14th and in the first third of the race he was a low twenties performer. By lap 118 he found himself a lap down. Then later in the race after he got the Lucky Dog he started to rebound. Unfortunately his race wasn’t incident free. On lap 320 he said his transmission was stuck and that issue sent him to the garage. At the time of his trouble he was running around 9th place. In fall 2013 Newman had a solid race. He started in 3rd, had a 6th place average running position, earned the 7th best driver and finished 8th. In spring 2013 Ryan Newman started in 5th but that’s his lone highlight. After the green flag waved he slowly started falling deeper and deeper in the running order. Around lap #270 he was complaining about some type of shock problem with his car. Shortly after that around lap 300 he took out his frustrations on the back of David Gilliland’s car and spun the #38. Since this is a self-cleaning track Gilliland spun down the groove right into Newman. If that incident didn’t happen he likely would’ve finished around the mid-twenties. (Yahoo A Driver)
