The Importance Of Starting Up Front At Sonoma
Starting up front is important at Sonoma. Since 1989 only twice has the winner started lower than 14th.
Over the last six Sonoma races the average starting position of the race winner is 7th. In four of these six races the winner started 6th or better.
In last years race winner Carl Edwards started in 4th. The top 10 however only comprised 3 of the drivers who started in the top ten. The average starting position of the drivers who finished in the top ten was 16.5. Among the drivers who started in the top ten last year as long as they avoided problems they finished in the top 16. The drivers who finished outside of that range found some type of problem (Harvick, Allmendinger and Larson).
In 2013 Martin Truex Jr. won from 14th. In that race 10 of the top 11 finishers started in the top 15. The average starting position of the top 11 finishers in that event was 9th.
