There’s only been four races at Kentucky and starting position has proven to be important. At Kentucky the average starting position of a race winner is 6.5. Half the races at Kentucky have been won from the pole.
Last year at Kentucky five of the drivers who started in the top ten finished in the top ten. It likely would’ve been higher but Denny Hamlin, Jamie McMurray and Kyle Larson had problems. The other drivers who started in the top ten were Kurt Busch who finished 12th and Danica Patrick who finished 21st.

2013 was a wild race at Kentucky that included a “Big One” and lots of other adversity. In that event Matt Kenseth had a good car and won with pit strategy from 16th place. In that race only two drivers who finished in the top ten started in the top ten. The average starting position of the top ten in that event was 15.2.
In 2012 eight of the top eleven finishers started in the top ten.
In 2011 six of the top ten starters finished in the top ten. Nine of the top fifteen finishers started in the top ten.
