Indianapolis Jeff Kyle 400 Fantasy NASCAR Front Runner Rankings
Carl Edwards – Carl Edwards has been getting better in recent weeks and now has back to back top tens. One attribute I like about him is his team. When changes happen in NASCAR I’ve long thought that Joe Gibbs Racing was the best organization at adapting new rules going back to the introduction of the COT. At the Brickyard the main attribute Edwards brings to the table is his consistency. At this venue he has a 13.4 average result and in three of his last four races he’s finished between 13th and 15th. Last year Edwards was a mid to high teens performer. He started 18th, earned the 17th best driver rating, had a 16th place average running position and finished 15th. In 2013 he ran very well for the first half of the event. He started in 3rd and through the mid-way point I would estimate his average running position was around 3rd. Then around the mid-way point through pit strategy he got shuffled back into the low double digits and he never worked his way up to the front again. When the checkered flag waved he finished 13th, had an 8th place average running position and earned the 10th best driver rating. In 2012 he didn’t have an incident free race. He qualified second but trouble found him early. Just 13 laps into the race he was on pit road with his hood up because he had engine issues. As a result of that he finished 29th. In the four Indy races prior to that he had results of 14th, 7th, 15th and 2nd. At Pocono earlier this year Edwards ran well early but faded to a 15th place finish. (Yahoo B Driver)

Martin Truex Jr. – Pocono is the most similar track to Indy and earlier this season at that venue Martin Truex Jr. won in dominant fashion. In addition to finishing first he also earned the best driver rating, had a 2nd place average running position and led 97 laps. Last year at Indy there was nothing notable about Truex. He started 25th, finished 25th and had an 18th place average running position. In 2013 he started deep in the field in 38th and finished 11th. In the race he slowly worked his way up through the running order and his result wasn’t due to pit strategy. In 2012 he was solid and walked away with his best result. He finished 8th, earned the 7th best driver rating and had a 10th place average running position. Martin Truex Jr. has been sliding in recent weeks but this would be a good week for him to bounce back. (Yahoo B Driver)

Ryan Newman – Ryan Newman has been a consistent driver at Indy. Since 2008 he has a 10.7 average finish and the 11th best driver rating. A typical good finish for him at Indy is in the low double digits. Over the last seven Indy races he has four results between 11th and 14th. Last year at Indy had an OK performance. He started 4th, finished 11th, earned the 12th best driver rating and had a 15th place average running position. His average running position is a better indicator than his finish as to how competitive he was. In 2013 Newman had a strong car and raced his way to victory lane. In that event he started 1st, finished 1st, earned the second best driver rating, had a 3rd place average running position and led 45 laps. When the green flag waved he led the first 29 laps and then lost the lead during the first pit cycle. In the middle 80% percent of the race he typically ran between 3rd and 8th. In the race he didn’t have the best car but that didn’t stop him from going to victory lane. During his last pit stop his team opted for two tires and nearly everyone else did four. That got him a healthy lead in which he hung on to as Jimmie Johnson was closing the gap rapidly in the closing laps. In 2012 he finished 7th, had a 12th place average running position and earned the 9th best driver rating. His next four Indy results were finishes of 12th, 17th, 14th and 13th. At Pocono earlier this year Newman was top ten good but finished poorly after wrecking while battling for 7th. (Yahoo A Driver)
