Daytona Pre-race Notes
Qualifying was canceled due to inclement weather. The starting order was set by practice #1 speeds.
Drivers who drove backup cars after wrecking in practice: Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle, Martin Truex Jr., Denny Hamlin, Jamie McMurray, Ryan Newman, Trevor Bayne, Sam Hornish Jr., Carl Edwards and Michael Annett.
Brian Scott drove the #33.
Tires typically start showing signs of ware 20-25 laps into a run.
The pit window is about 45-48 laps.

Daytona Race Notes
Dale Earnhardt Jr. started on the pole and selected to start in the inside lane.
Austin Dillon had momentum running the high-line and led laps 1 through 8. When he got the lead he immediately jumped to the bottom to block Earnhardt Jr.
Big Moment: On lap #3 David Gilliland spun. He was running in 4th at the time. He was trying to come down the track but he clipped Clint Bowyer’s front bumper. A “Big One” ensued about 30th back in the pack. The drivers who were involved in that carnage were Joey Logano, Danica Patrick, Greg Biffle, Terry Labonte, Brian Scott, Michael Annett and Sam Hornish Jr.
When the race restarted after the “Big One”, Dale Earnhardt Jr. retook the lead. He led laps 9 through 26.
On lap 10 Joey Logano was black flagged. He was involved in the early “Big One.” NASCAR wasn’t happy with how his car looked.
On lap 11 Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s car had standout speed while he was pacing the draft.

Notable Moment: On lap 17 Kyle Busch got into the wall hard and got heavy right side damage. His car was loose. He immediately came to pit road and the race stayed green. He was running in the low double digits at the time.
On lap 20 Landon Cassill was running in 3rd.

At the completion of lap 25 the competition caution came out.
Top Ten Off Pit Road Following The Competition Caution: 48,88,5,24,78,11,19,20,42,33
During the competition caution Kyle Busch and Greg Biffle who both wrecked earlier were penalized for too many men over the wall.
On lap 31 when the field went back to green Jeff Gordon went to the top lane by himself. He quickly plummeted in the running order.

Denny Hamlin had a very strong car. He started deep in the field and had no trouble advancing in the running order.
On lap 33 Jimmie Johnson took the lead. He had a run and turned under the #88. He then led the next 22 laps. He had a very strong car and was able to block both lanes.

On lap 45 Kasey Kahne who was running near the front got scuffled out of line and plummeted in the running order.

Big Moment: On lap 53 while running in 13th Carl Edwards got loose and spun. He had some contact with the inside wall and damaged his car. During this caution Kyle Busch got the free pass and got back on the lead lap.
During the Carl Edwards caution Casey Mears was in 14th but got penalized for driving through too many pit stalls. This dropped him deep in the running order.
On lap 58 following the Carl Edwards caution Dale Earnhardt Jr. retook the lead.
On lap 59 David Gilliland who was involved in the first “Big One” had a cut tire and spun by himself. During this caution Carl Edwards got the free pass and got back on the lead lap.

On lap 67 nearly the entire field was single file being led by Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Kyle Larson was happy with his car on lap 70. He was running in 5th at the time.

Big Moment: On lap 87 another “Big One” ensued. Drivers involved were Carl Edwards, Brian Scott, Kyle Larson, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Austin Dillon. Brian Scott and Carl Edwards got heavy damage. The other drivers were able to keep going mostly unscathed. Kyle Larson dropped a lap down from this accident. The incident happened when Kyle Larson got loose and lost control of his car.
