Every week in NASCAR there’s drivers who have problems in the race and walk away with an asterisk mark result. Understanding misleading finishes and knowing how good drivers truly were can help give you the edge on your competition. Many fantasy racers just looked at results and assume that’s how good drivers were. This post explains who had a misleading result last fall at Phoenix, and how good they truly were.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. – Race winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a misleading result last fall at Phoenix. He looked destined to finish 3rd but the end of the race was favorable for him. What got him the victory was the timing of a late caution during the pit cycle. It got him the lead and essentially the win because the race never went back to green. He never led prior to the caution during the pit cycle.
Kasey Kahne – Kasey Kahne ran well last fall at Phoenix and showed top ten potential early. Unfortunately his race wasn’t incident free. During the lap 40 competition caution he damaged his car on pit road after contact with DiBendetto and after that his car was never the same. When the race reached its conclusion he finished 26th.
Kurt Busch – Kurt Busch had a phenomenal car at Phoenix. Performance wise he might’ve had the second best car. Unfortunately he made a self-inflicted mistake and jumped the start of the race and beat Jimmie Johnson to the start line. That led to him getting black flagged and having to drive his guts out to finish 7th.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. – Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was high-teens good at Phoenix last fall. Unfortunately he wrecked near the end during the middle of a pit cycle. At the time of his wreck he was in 19th. When the checkered flag waved he finished 41st.
Kevin Harvick – Kevin Harvick had the field covered last fall. Him finishing 2nd is misleading. It denied him from getting his 5th straight win at Phoenix. If the race wasn’t interrupted by a caution during the pit cycle there’s no doubt he would’ve won.
