Phoenix Good Sam 500 NASCAR Practice #2 Notes
Jimmie Johnson – Practiced in his backup car after wrecking in qualifying. His steering wheel wasn’t locked in place when he wrecked. His backup car was used last fall at Richmond (finished 9th). His lap times were said to be consistent. Chad Knaus said Johnson was doing a good job. Practiced coming to pit road. Towards the end of practice he said some adjustments were a step in the right direction. His car was free in turns 1 & 2 and has good drive off of turn 4.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. – Ran competitive lap times after yesterday’s disappointing qualifying effort. Nine minutes into practice he said, “I got real loose in and off.” Later he said he was tighter through the center. Towards the end he said, “Chattered the right rear every where.” He also said his team still has some work to do to fix the handling. He said it was hard to be consistent. With a few minutes remaining he said, “Tighter in the throttle but I could snap loose.” Wants his team to check his power steering after the session. Had some problems with timing lights on his dash.
AJ Allmendinger – Early in practice his crew chief told him that he was driving with “good pace.”. Allmendinger said his car was getting tighter each lap. Towards the end of practice he said, “feels like sliding on grease, no turn and tight all the way through the corner.”

Kevin Harvick – Had a very fast car with little drop off. With about 20 minutes remaining his team made an adjustment that made him tighter in the middle. He didn’t like that adjustment.
Michael Annett – Pounded the wall hard in the first 10 minutes of practice. He’ll be going to a backup car. It’s speculated his throttle hung.
