Fantasy NASCAR Asterisk Mark Report – Darlington
Every week in NASCAR there’s drivers who have problems in the race and walk away with an asterisk mark finish. Understanding misleading results and knowing how good drivers truly were can help give you the edge on your competition. Many fantasy racers just look at results and assume that’s how good drivers were. This post explains who had a misleading result last year at Darlington, and how good they truly were.
Matt Kenseth – Darlington has been a great track for Matt Kenseth and recently he’s ranked as one of the best drivers. Last year he had a great car but finished 21st. He started in 14th and moved up through the field quickly. Unfortunately his race wasn’t incident free. On lap 22 while he was running in 3rd he pitted under green because of a flat tire. That dropped him two laps down deep in the running order. He was never really able to recover from that. In the three Darlington races prior to that he had results of 4th, 1st and 6th.

Brad Keselowski – Brad Keselowski finished 2nd last year at Darlington. How in the world does that get an asterisk mark you’re probably wondering? Hands down Keselowski had the best car last year. If the late caution didn’t come out with about 13 laps to go which got Edwards the lead off pit road I think there’s no way Keselowski would’ve lost.
Jimmie Johnson – Jimmie Johnson finished 19th last year at Darlington. That result doesn’t reflect his level of performance. Performance wise he was top ten good. A key moment for him in the race was when he spun on lap 134. He was running in 10th at the time. That put him out of sync with the field “Tire strategy wise” for the rest of the race and it really burned him in the closing phase of the race. In the three Darlington races prior to that he had results of 3rd, 4th and 1st.
