Richmond Pre-Race Notes

The pit window was about 85 laps. Over the course of a long run speeds dropped off about 3 seconds.
Richmond Race Notes
Kevin Harvick started on the pole and selected the bottom lane. He led the first 21 laps.
Jimmie Johnson was happy with his car all weekend. Early in the race nobody ran higher than him in the turns.
Kyle Busch had a very good car. He was able to pass drivers by running a little higher in the corners.
On lap 21 Jimmie Johnson assumed the lead.
Running order on lap 27: 48,4,19,18,22,11,41,5,2,3 … 20,42,88,47,16,17,31,78,6,24 … 43,14,1,10,21,27,13,44,23,38 … 7,83,15,95,34,93,46,32,30,55
Joey Logano’s car really faded over a long run early in race. On lap 44 he was back to 10th. He started in 2nd. For whatever reason his team set up his car for being good over a short run. He said he could hang on for 15 to 20 laps before his car was “gone.”
Around lap 45 Kasey Kahne scrapped the wall. He was running in the top ten at the time.
Kevin Harvick’s car was loose and he was back to 3rd on lap 48.
Running order on lap 55: 48,19,18,4,11,41,5,2,17,3 … 20,88,42,16,31,6,22,78,14,24 … 43,47,10,1,23,13,27,21,38,44 … 7,15,83,34,95,93,46,32,55,30
On lap 66 Carl Edwards passed Jimmie Johnson for the lead and led the next 24 laps.
On lap 71 Joey Logano was back to 25th.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. had a good long run car. He was in 7th on lap 74.
Running order on lap 74: 19,48,18,11,4,5,17,41,2,20 … 3,88,16,6,42,31,14,78,43,23 … 24,10,47,1,22,13,27,38,21,44 … 15,7,83,95,34,46,93,55,32,30
Running order on lap 106: 19,18,11,2,4,48,5,41,17,78 … 3,20,88,31,16,6,42,43,23,14 … 10,24 (first driver on lap down),1,47,21,27,13,22,83,44 … 15,38,95,7,34,46,93,32,55,30
On lap 111 Joe Gibbs Racing was running 1,2,3
On lap 131 it was reported adjustments weren’t really helping Truex Jr. very much.
Running order on lap 133: 19,18,11,4,48,2,5,41,17,20 … 88,16,3,78,31,6,43,23,14,42 … 24,10,1,47,21,13,27,22,83,44 … 38,15,95,7,34,46,93,32,55,30
Only 18 cars were on the lead lap on lap 152
Running order on lap 153: 19,18,11,4,48,5,17,41,2,20 … 88,16,78,3,31,6,43,23,14,42 … 24,1,10,47,21,13,27,22,83,38 …. 44,15,95,7,34,46,93,32,55,30
On lap 157 the first caution of the race came out for debris. That was the longest green flag run to start a race since 1979 at RIR.
Notable Moment: During the first round of pit stops Denny Hamlin and Chris Buescher got pit penalties for having uncontrolled tires. Hamlin was running in 3rd prior to his penalty. He restarted in 17th place. Buscher was 3 laps down prior to the penalty.
During the restart following the first caution, Carl Edwards spun his tires and Kyle Busch then assumed the lead. Busch then led the next 11 laps until Carl Edwards repassed him.
Running order on lap 175: 19,18,47,4,41,5,20,2,88,78 … 17,16,31,43,3,6,11,23,42,24 … 14,1,47,22,21,10,13,27,38,83
On lap 179 Denny Hamlin reported he was low on volts. He had already switched to his backup battery.
David Ragan ran legitimately well. He was on the lead lap in 18th on lap 195.
