Fantasy NASCAR Asterisk Mark Report – Martinsville
Every week in NASCAR there’s drivers who have problems in the race and walk away with an asterisk mark result. Understanding misleading finishes and knowing how good drivers truly were can help give you the edge on your competition. Many fantasy racers just look at results and assume that’s how good drivers were. This post explains who had a misleading result last fall at Martinsville, and how good they truly were.
Kevin Harvick – It looked like Kevin Harvick had a competitive top ten car last fall at Martinsville but when the checkered flag waved he finished 20th. In the race he started in 20th and raced his way up to 4th, but under caution around lap 133 he was caught speeding on pit road. That dropped him back to 20th and he had a hard time recovering from that, almost like he didn’t want to race through the field again. Later in the race he was affected by the caution during the pit cycle which dropped him two laps down which cemented him into his poor result.
Jimmie Johnson – Jimmie Johnson had a great car last fall and raced his way to victory lane at Martinsville. I will note I believe he had the best car by merit (had to pass Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch late and then led the final 92 laps), but if the caution during the pit cycle didn’t happen he probably wouldn’t have won. That lucky break advanced him from 10th to 3rd.
