Kevin Harvick who started on the pole selected to start in the low-line. He led the first 36 laps. Of the first 127 laps he paced the field for all but 3 circuits. Kevin Harvick’s car was extremely strong at running the low-line. Nobody else could run that groove at his pace. In just 7 laps he had a 1.5 second lead.

Around lap 35 the first pit cycle started. Atlanta is very hard on tires and it’s the reason for the early stops because the speed drop off is so great. During this pit cycle Ryan Newman led 3 laps. When one driver comes to pit road almost everyone follows them shortly.

Notable Moment: While running just outside the top ten on lap 47, Ryan Blaney made an unexpected pit stop for a tire issue. This dropped him a lap down into the thirties.

Big Moment: With 7 laps to go in Stage #2, Denny Hamlin made an unexpected pit stop for a vibration. After completing his stop he said something was broken. Prior to his problem he was running in the top ten. He burned a right rear hub.
The end of Stage #2 marked the end of the race for Hamlin.
