Fantasy NASCAR Asterisk Mark Report – Martinsville
Every week in NASCAR there’s drivers who have problems in the race and walk away with an asterisk mark result. Understanding misleading finishes and knowing how good drivers truly were can help give you the edge on your competition. Many fantasy racers just look at results and assume that’s how good drivers were. This post explains who had a misleading result this spring at Martinsville, and how good they truly were.
Denny Hamlin – Denny Hamlin was a top five contender this spring at Martinsville, but when the checkered flag waved he finished 12th. In the final quarter of the race his nose was damaged and during a caution with about 115 laps to go, he pitted twice to repair damage which dropped him from the top 5 to 16th. In the race it should be noted he earned the 4th best driver rating, had a 6th place average running position, led 111 laps, won Stage #1 and finished 5th in Stage #2.
Bubba Wallace – Bubba Wallace had a troubled track debut this spring at Martinsville and finished 34th. I’ll note his race wasn’t incident free. On lap 66 he had a flat tire and made an unexpected pit stop. Shortly before his problem he was running around 18th. This dropped him 2 laps down back to last (38th). Later it was revealed he broke his sway bar connector.
Jamie McMurray – Jamie McMurray didn’t have a great car this spring at Martinsville, but he was a little better than his 26th place result. With 9 laps to go he had a tire that was smoking and he immediately came down pit road. Prior to pitting he was running around 21st. From the race it should be noted he had a 21st place average running position and earned the 21st best driver rating.
