Charlotte Roval Fantasy NASCAR Front Runner Rankings
Erik Jones – Erik Jones is facing his second straight first round Playoff bounce if he doesn’t win at the Roval. Last year at the Roval, Jones had a tough weekend. He had a huge crash in practice, he didn’t have an incident free race and finished 30th. On lap 72 he had a flat tire, limped around the track and then later spun out. It was a weekend he would love to forget. At other road courses, Jones has been pretty good and between Sonoma and Watkins Glen he’s finished in the top ten in 5 of his 6 races. This year at road courses, Jones has swept the top ten and has results of 4th (Watkins Glen) and 8th (Sonoma). On Sunday, if Jones can avoid trouble I would look for him to compete for a top ten.

Jimmie Johnson – At the Charlotte Roval, look for Jimmie Johnson to go all out for the win. He nearly won last year, and after how that race played out he’ll likely be racing with a ton of confidence and a chip on his shoulder. A lot of drivers have a lot to lose on Sunday, but not him. He’s solely racing for the win. Last year at the Roval, Johnson drove very aggressively throughout the race and then on the last lap when he was within striking distance to take the “W”, he wheel hopped while running in 2nd and took out Truex Jr. When the checkered flag waved he finished 8th, had an 8th place average running position and earned the 2nd best driver rating. This year at road courses, Johnson has results of 12th (Sonoma) and 19th (Watkins Glen). On Sunday, I would look for Johnson to compete for a top ten.
William Byron – If you’re looking for a dark horse at the Charlotte Roval, William Byron might be able to come up big for you. He ran pretty well last year, and I’m pretty encouraged by his performance at road courses this year. At Sonoma, he started 2nd, won Stage #1, led 21 laps but finished 19th because of poor pit strategy. Sonoma represents the infield and last year at the Roval I found that to be the primary passing area. At Watkins Glen, I think he was top ten good but he had “Kyle Busch” problems which derailed his afternoon and led to a 21st place finish. Last year at the Roval, Byron looked competitive but finished a misleading 34th. On lap 45 he had a tire going down, made an unexpected pit stop and got a commitment cone violation. Right before his problem he was running in 6th. That was a pretty big setback. Then right at the end he was caught up in the “Big One” restart. On lap 100 which was shortly before the end he was running in 8th. On Sunday because of his points situation, Byron essentially needs to win.
