Fantasy NASCAR Asterisk Mark Report – Daytona Summer 2019
Last summer at Daytona, the attrition rate was apocalyptic. Almost everyone had a misleading result from Justin Haley who won, to the drivers who finished in the back. The race had a couple of crashes, a “Big One”, and then at the end it was rain shortened. The race was truly the “Perfect storm” for generating misleading results. This post will highlight some of the most notable competitive performers who had a misleading result last summer at Daytona.
Denny Hamlin – Denny Hamlin was a contender last summer at Daytona, but he finished a misleading 26th after crashing in the “Big One.” In the race he led laps 113 to 117, but then on lap 119 the “Big One” ensued and he was collected in the carnage. When it was “Go time” with impending weather in the area, Hamlin had no trouble getting up to the front. If his race would’ve been incident free I think he clearly was going to be tough to beat.
Clint Bowyer – Clint Bowyer had a strong showing last summer at Daytona but he finished a disastrous 34th. In the race he finished 7th in Stage #1, 5th in Stage #2 and was running in 2nd behind race leader Austin Dillon on lap 119 when he wrecked the race leader causing the “Big One.”
Austin Dillon – Austin Dillon had a strong showing last summer at Daytona, but finished an asterisk mark 33rd. In the race he won Stage #2, led a race high 46 laps and was the leader at the time of the “Big One” when he was wrecked while running out front. If his race would’ve been incident free, I think its clear he was poised to finish well.
Joey Logano – Joey Logano finished 25th last summer at Daytona, but that’s a misleading result. “Performance Wise”, I thought Logano had the best car but he was a victim of the “Big One.” In the race he won Stage #1 with a last lap pass, led 40 laps, earned the best driver rating and was the leader 9 laps before the “Big One” ensued. If the race went the advertised distance, I think the road to victory lane would’ve gone through him.
