Fantasy NASCAR Asterisk Mark Report – Homestead
Denny Hamlin – Denny Hamlin finished 10th last fall at Homestead, but he was steaming with that result. Literally! (My Twitter GIF). In the race he finished 5th in Stage #1, 5th in Stage #2 but with 49 laps to go while he was running in 3rd his car started to overheat after his team put a big piece of tape on his front grill which led to an unexpected pit stop. If that self inflicted problem didn’t happen, I think he was clearly poised to finish in the top five.
William Byron – William Byron had a solid car last fall at Homestead, but he finished a misleading 39th. In the race he finished 8th in Stage #1, just outside the top ten in Stage #2, but with about 50 laps to go engine issues led to an early exit. 13 laps before his engine issues he was running in 12th.
John Hunter Nemechek – Last fall at Homestead there was only three cautions. Two were for Stages, and one was for John Hunter Nemechek crashing in Stage #2. “Performance Wise”, Nemechek looked mid to high-twenties good.
Martin Truex Jr. – Martin Truex Jr. finished 2nd in last years season finale, but I think that’s an asterisk mark result. “Performance Wise”, I think Truex had the best car. In the race he won Stage #1, but during Stage #2 while leading he had a pit snafu when his team put tires on the wrong sides of his car. That led to an unexpected pit stop, but he still rallied to finished 4th in Stage #2 because his car was that strong. Then in the final Stage his team employed some desperate pit strategy which hurt him. If he didn’t have that pit problem which put him behind, I think there’s a great chance he would’ve won.
