The starting temperature was 88F. Weather cautions in the race turned the end into a night race, which wasn’t planned.
Quin Houff and BJ McLeod started in the rear of the field.

Homestead Race Notes
Denny Hamlin who started on the pole selected to start in the outside lane.
Joey Logano who started in 2nd led the opening 8 laps. Overall he led 27 of the first 29 laps.
On lap 4, Tyler Reddick was up 10 positions. He was running the high-line right near the wall. He started in 24th and was up to 14th.
On lap 5, the first caution came out for lightening. The red flag was out for 2 hours and 8 minutes.
William Byron and Ty Dillon were notable drivers who came to pit road during the first caution.
On the restart following the lightening caution, Denny Hamlin took the lead for a lap before Logano retook it and led the next 12.

Notable Moment: On lap 21, Ryan Newman had a tire go down and spun. He didn’t hit anything but it looked like he had hard contact with the apron while he was sliding down the track. This brought out a caution and NASCAR used it as the competition caution.

On lap 30, Chase Elliott passed Logano for the lead and he then led the next 7 laps.
On lap 33, the caution came out for rain. The red flag was out for 39 minutes.
Big Moment: Joey Logano had major problems during the rain caution on pit road. He ran into the back of Quin Houff and got some nose damage. Harvick and DiBenedetto also got damage at this time and came back to pit road. Logano fell back to 11th from the lead. After coming back to pit road, Harvick and DiBenedetto dropped to 37th and 38th.
- Truex Jr. had a +20 second pit stop during this caution to make a lot of adjustments.

On lap 37, Ryan Blaney got the lead and then led the next 39 laps.
On lap 42 while running in 10th, Erik Jones radioed his team that he thought he had a tire going flat. Jones stayed out on the track and never came in.
On lap 44, Jeff Gordon said that Denny Hamlin had a very good long run car.

On lap 76, Denny Hamlin passed Ryan Blaney for the lead and went on to win Stage #1.

- Joey Logano had a long pit stop. His team was looking for a hole in his nose.
- Jimmie Johnson made an extended pit stop to fix a roof flat tether.

Notable Moment: On lap 170, the 2nd caution came out when Joey Logano and Ryan Newman had contact. Newman now had a hole in his nose. Newman and Logano both now had notable body damage.
