The Super Low Tier – Indy Road Course
Justin Haley – At the Indy Road Course, Justin Haley is poised to be the top “Super Low Tier” option. He’s in the best equipment of the tier, and in 2021 on this track type minus COTA where he had a “Steering DNF”, Haley’s finished between 24th to 29th every race and has a 26.0 average finish. His results over his three incident free road course races this year are 24th (Daytona RC), 25th (Road America) and 29th (Watkins Glen). One attribute I like about Haley among drivers of this tier is track time. He’s of course racing on Saturday in the Xfinity Series, and last year in the lower series he finished 2nd. At Indy, look for Haley to be a mid to high-twenties performer.
James Davison – James Davison is a quality Super Low Tier option for Indy. Davison had electrical problems at Watkins Glen and finished a clunker 37th, but in his other four road course races this year he’s 4 for 4 at finishing in the 20’s and has a 26.3 average finish. I’ll note, prior to his early demise at Watkins Glen I think he showed high-twenties potential. On Sunday, I’m going to view Davison as a mid to high-twenties driver, but note leaning towards the high-twenties is smart.
Josh Bilicki – Josh Bilicki has been in all five road course races this year and his combined average finish is 30.2. At Road America, Bilicki had his best road course result and finished 23rd, but in the other four road course races this season he’s finished between 29th to 36th. On Sunday, I would view Bilicki as a low to mid-thirties driver.
Cody Ware – At Indy, I think Cody Ware will likely be a low to mid-thirties driver. This year at road courses he finished 25th (29.5 avg. running position) at the Daytona Road Course, but then in his other three races on this track type he finished between 30th to 34th.
Andy Lally– Andy Lally will be subbing for Kyle Tilley at the Indy Road Course. Lally hasn’t competed in the Cup level since 2011! When Tilley was behind the wheel of this car he went 3 for 3 at finishing between 30th to 35th at road courses. That’s a trend I think Lally will likely continue. Tilley’s results this season were 30th (Watkins Glen), 31st (COTA) and 35th (Road America)..
Quin Houff – At Indy, Quin Houff has low to mid-thirties finish written all over him. This year at road courses he had an engine failure at the Daytona Road Course, but in the other four races on this track type he’s finished between 32nd to 36th.
Timmy Hill – Remember Timmy Hill? He’ll be back on Sunday racing at Indy. I don’t expect him to do anything good, and in 6 of his last 7 races this season he’s finished 35th or worse. This year at road courses, Hill has one start under his belt and at the Daytona Road Course he finished 29th, but take note he had a 35.9 average running position.
