Fantasy NASCAR Asterisk Mark Report – Phoenix (Spring 2021)
Kyle Larson – This spring at Phoenix, Kyle Larson had one of the best cars, but he finished an asterisk mark 7th. In the race, Larson and the #5 team didn’t make things easy for themselves. They started in the rear of the field, and got two speeding penalties. At the time of his first speeding penalty during the competition caution (Lap 30), Larson climbed up to 9th. At the time of his second speeding penalty during green flag pit stops around lap 144, Larson rallied up to 2nd. Late in the race, Larson was able to climb back up to 4th on lap 280. In terms of speed analytics, Larson was the fastest driver late in a run and had the 4th best Total Speed Ranking. If Larson didn’t have to overcome all that adversity, he likely would’ve been in the mix to win.
Chase Briscoe – Chase Briscoe finished 22nd this spring at Phoenix, but take note his race wasn’t incident free. “Performance Wise”, Briscoe potentially had mid-teens potential, but he was caught speeding on pit road around lap 260 (was just outside the top ten prior to that) and he just never bounced back.
Kyle Busch – Nobody had more problems then Kyle Busch this spring at Phoenix and he finished an asterisk mark 25th. In the race, Busch finished 6th in Stage #1, but then in Stage #2 Busch had his first problem during green flag pit stops around lap 140 when his pit crew had an uncontrolled tire (just outside the top ten at that time). That dropped Busch a lap down. Then in the final Stage, Busch made an unexpected pit stop on lap 260 which dropped him two laps down. Shortly after that on lap 281, Busch got into the wall and spun which added insult to injury. If Busch’s race would’ve been incident free, I think he was a top ten contender.
