World Wide Technology Raceway Front Runner Rankings
Aric Almirola – Aric Almirola is at his best at shorter-flat tracks, and at World Wide Technology Raceway (Gateway), I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s somehow a factor. Don’t forget, Almirola raced his way to victory lane last summer at New Hampshire, so his team is certainly capable of running well at shorter-flat tracks. Over the combined races since 2021 on this sub-track type, Almirola has a 10.1 average finish, a 12.7 average running position and he’s only once finished outside the top 15. Unfortunately, Almirola’s one result outside the top 15 came at Richmond, the most recent shorter-flat track visited and at that venue he finished 21st. This spring at Phoenix, Almirola finished 12th. At Gateway, I would view Almirola as a low double-digit to mid-teens driver who has upside.

Kurt Busch – At Gateway, Kurt Busch will be a driver to watch, but his recent luck overall at shorter-flat tracks hasn’t been so great. Since 2021 on this sub-track type, Busch has just 1 top ten, four results in the teens and then two results in the 30’s. That said, 23XI is starting to find their groove, and I have no doubt Busch is capable of running well. This year at shorter-flat tracks, Busch finished 5th at Phoenix (not as good as his result, 15.6 average running position, 16th best Total Speed Ranking) and then had problems under his hood early at Richmond which relegated him to a 35th. At Gateway, I’m going to view Busch as a top ten contender.
Austin Dillon – Austin Dillon has run well in 2022 and has frequently been a top ten contender on a weekly basis, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a top ten contender at Gateway. At Richmond, the most recent shorter-flat track visited he came home 10th, so it’s a very reasonable expectation. At Phoenix, the other shorter-flat track visited this year he was poised to finish in the top ten but was crashed on the final lap from Suarez. Between the two shorter-flat tracks visited this year, Dillon is tied for having the 13th best Total Speed Ranking. Look for Dillon to be solid at Gateway.
