Fantasy NASCAR Asterisk Mark Report – Atlanta (Spring 2022)
Christopher Bell – Christopher Bell was strong and crossed the finish line in 2nd this spring at Atlanta, but in the results column, you’ll see an asterisk mark 23rd. On the last lap, Bell was penalized for going below the yellow line. In the race, Bell finished 10th in Stage #1, led 16 laps, had an 11.4 average running position and consistently ran near the front in the final Stage. With 7 laps to go, Bell was running in 7th.
Ryan Blaney – This spring at Atlanta, Ryan Blaney had one of the best cars and was a contender to win, but his race went south on the final lap. In the race, Blaney won Stage #2, led 15 laps, had the 2nd best average running position (8.1) but finished an asterisk mark 17th. At the start of the final lap while Blaney was running in 4th, Wallace got loose in front of him and that then led to Blaney getting into the wall and fading back to his poor finish.
Tyler Reddick – Tyler Reddick looked strong this spring at Atlanta, but like many he ended up walking away with a misleading result. In the race, Reddick finished 8th in Stage #1, led 5 laps, was the leader on lap 141, but then on lap 145 he spun near the front of the field (tire went down) and then the “Big One” ensued.
Bubba Wallace – Bubba Wallace looked strong this spring at Atlanta and consistently ran in the top five late, but his afternoon unraveled on the final lap and he finished an asterisk mark 13th. At the start of the final lap, Wallace was running in 2nd but then he got loose which caused him to slip up the track and lose a handful of positions, and then coming to the finish line he wrecked.
Kevin Harvick – Kevin Harvick was strong at Atlanta this spring and looked like a top ten contender, but he finished an asterisk mark 30th. On lap 197 he was running in 15th, but then on lap 202, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. crashed while leading and Harvick was caught up in the carnage. Shortly before that on lap 197, Harvick was logging laps in the top five.
Aric Almirola – Aric Almirola looked strong this spring at Phoenix, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at his 22nd. In the race, Almirola was at his best late, and in the race he finished 4th in Stage #2, but then late in the final Stage on lap 307 while he was running in 3rd and was the first car in the inside lane, he was spun.
Denny Hamlin – Denny Hamlin looked strong at Atlanta this spring, but his race wasn’t incident free and he finished a misleading 29th. In the race, Hamlin finished 2nd in Stage #1, was running in 12th on lap 141, but then on lap 145 the #11 was damaged in the “Big One.” Hamlin rebounded though since his car wasn’t too damaged and on lap 197 he was running 5th. Shortly after that though on lap 208, Larson spun and hit the #11 and that marked the end of his race.
Kyle Larson – Kyle Larson showed up with speed this spring at Atlanta, but he finished a clunker 30th. In the race, Larson finished 9th in Stage #1, was running in 10th on lap 141, but then on lap 145 he was swept up in the “Big One.” Larson kept on motoring along though and on lap 208 while he was leading the outside row, he spun into the side of Chase Elliott and the wall/Hamlin and then after that it was game over for him and he went on to finish 30th.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. – Ricky Stenhouse Jr. had a great car this spring at Atlanta but he crashed and finished a misleading 31st. In the race, Stenhouse finished 4th in Stage #1, led 22 laps, but then on lap 202 while leading he had a flat tire and spun which doomed him to his poor result.
Austin Cindric – This spring at Atlanta, Austin Cindric showed some potential but crashed on lap 145 which led to his 32nd. On lap 141 just prior to that he was running in 17th. For much of the race prior to that he typically ran between the low double-digits to mid-teens.
Kyle Busch – Kyle Busch was strong at Atlanta this spring, but like numerous others, his afternoon was anything but incident free and he walked away with a 33rd. On lap 101, Busch was running in 4th, but then later that lap during a restart he crashed. Later in the race, Busch had a mini-spin but at that time his team decided to call it a race.
Austin Dillon – Austin Dillon showed speed this spring at Atlanta but like about a quarter of the field he had problems while running in the top five. On lap 101 he was running in 3rd, but then that very lap he crashed which led to his 35th.
Cole Custer – Cole Custer really didn’t run that well this spring at Atlanta, but I’ll note he did crash which contributed to his 34th. On lap 141 he was running in 29th, and then on lap 145 he crashed.
Chase Briscoe – This spring at Atlanta, Chase Briscoe was a top five contender but finished an asterisk mark 15th after having trouble on the final lap. In the race, Briscoe started on the pole (qualifying rained out), led 5 laps, finished 3rd in Stage #2 and had a 13.8 average running position. With three laps to go he was running in 5th, and then on the final lap while he was running around that position, Blaney who was just ahead of him got into the wall, and then Briscoe who was right behind him also got into it which caused him to fade on the last lap.
